During last two weeks, I've tried to use #Linux laptop in mixed-DPI mode. Thread with #summary / #rant / #hate follows.
Actors:
XPS 13" 3200x1800 with @fedora
monitor 27" 1920x1080

@fedora Initial state:
Fedora 31 KDE + updates-testing + copr:mkyral/plasma-unstable + X11

used per-monitor scaling:

xrandr --output DP-1 --auto --panning 2880x1620+3200+0 --scale 1.5x1.5 --right-of eDP-1

cons:
due scaling it is blurry
cant set monitors with Krandr

@fedora verdict: compared to other states pretty usable

@fedora state 1:
Wayland + swayWM

pros:
tiling
per-monitor fractional scaling

cons:
sway tray does not support StatusNotifierItem
keychain integration is not working (fill again all your wifi pw in nm-applet)
firefox/thunderbird is blurry (Xwayland) or buggy (MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1)

@fedora cons:
cant set monitors without CLI
sway is stealing i3wm configs leading tricky behaviour

verdict:
Beware of Greeks bearing young tiling wm

state 2:
Wayland + Plasma

pros:
per-monitor fractional scaling
Krandr/Kscreen working

cons:
Buggy
Plasma virtual desktop crashes whole session
Clipboard sync "bugs/features"
Spectacle not working for rectangular selection (use Flameshot)
Flatpack is blurry (slack)

cons:
firefox/thunderbird is blurry/buggy (as state 1)
Monitor dis/connection often causes plasma session crashes
Something is conflicting with SElinux

verdict:
Future is not as bright as it is promised.
Avoid HiDPI laptops if you can
