except there is a plan, a rather clear one that's been laid out by this admin and anti-Iran orgs like FDD they've staffed their Iran policy out to from day one. It's to bait Iran into a war and continue "maximum pressure" using bombings, sanctions, sectarian proxies, etc.
Trump's strategy isn't coming from nowhere, it's what neoconservatives have been lobbying the US do for 20+ years. It's not random and haphazard. The threats and bombings are all designed to provoke war and eventually regime change (or mass punishment if that's all they can get)
We have several indicators FDD is basically running Trump's Iran policy. They were the ones operating the State Dept funded bot network that was revealed this summer

FDD also pays the salaries of a members of Trump's National Security Council (while they work in the US govt!) which i guess is a normal thing
note the very first "analyst" NYT, in its very first story about the killing of Soleimani, turns to: FDD head Mark Dubowitz. Merely referring to FDD as "hawkish" and "conservative" w/o disclosing they literally work with and pay for Trump admin staffers
FDD has been central in shaping the anti-Iran posture in US media since Trump took office. They even acted as a stand in for The Iranian People™ for the NYT and WSJ during the Jan 2018 protests fair.org/home/think-tan…
when someone says the problem with the killing of Suleimani is that Trump "has no strategy" this is (a) not true and (b) totally misdiagnoses the problem. The problem isn't that Trump doesn't have a plan, the problem is he does and it's run by foaming regime change ideologues

beginning to notice there's a direct correlation between how long a democrats statement is on Trump's Solemiani killing and how much they don't actually oppose it.

this is a major rhetoric problem and one i've been writing about for yrs & i have no idea how people dont see how prefacing nominal anti-war statements by ACCEPTING THE ENTIRE MORAL PREMISE OF A WAR/BOMBING is a bad idea. It's not "nuance" its helping further PR for US aggression
at the very least if someone insists Bad Guy X "has murdered 1000s" or "has blood on their hands" Im curious if they think the same of US/Saudi/Israeli leaders. If not, why not, if so then how is this moral distinction meaningful in the context of MENA beyond careerist signaling?
US/UK liberals (anecdotally I would argue way more than other countries I've visited) are very quick to create ad hoc moral categories of Bad Actors with little attempt at forming a coherent model for how these categories are arrived at or what their implications will be.

I keep coming back to the basic contradiction in liberal discourse on climate crisis, on display in this poll but also US media in general (see: last week's Feasibility Scolding of Sanders GND in NYT): if one believes the science what the fuck difference does the cost matter?
reading that NYT piece handwringing about Feasibility and Costs of the Green New Deal I was imagining a bunch of guys w/ clipboards yelling at firefighters putting out a house fire that they were wasting too much water. Theres a massive, lightyears gap between science & response.
Others have noted this but it's worth repeating I think: in the Year of Our Lord 2019, handwringing about the costs of confronting climate crisis is denialism. It literally means you don't agree on the urgency of the problem and thus don't accept the science, full stop.
