It seems like many fire-affected species, inc threatened species, are being overshadowed by big charismatic species (*cough*koalas*cough*), especially when it comes to donations.

THREAD: I research the adaptation of #BlackCockatoos to novel environs, w/a focus on diet and food resources.
This is becoming highly relevant in light of the ongoing bushfire crisis here in Aus, so I wanted to write some thoughts based on my experience and research. /1 Image
The focus of this thread is parrots, but can be applied to other animal groups too.
I also work on adaptation to urban areas, but fire-affected habitat can be classified as a novel environment as well, as the resulting habitat and resource availability is drastically changed. /2
So, fire kills animals and destroys habitat, which can take a long time to recover. For survivors the most immediate concern is a lack of food resources. Longer term they will also be impacted by loss of breeding resources, like nest hollows, which are already in short supply. /3

For parrots, "food resources" usually means plant species, as most parrots are herbivores/nectarivores, eating seeds, fruits, nectar, sap, lichen etc. Some also eat grubs which are extracted from tree. Food resources are easily impacted by fire, drought, and land clearing.

Pruett-Jones: 3191867 individuals of 271 parrot species have been imported into the US. That’s 70% of all parrot sp! Over 80 sp have been seen in the wild at least once, and 29 sp are regularly reported. Florida is a parrot hotspot with ~70 sp seen there. #IOCongress2018

10+ LESSONS ON HOW TO MAKE MONEY

1) You have to have the patience to be in it for the long-term, instead of just looking to making a quick buck. Look for something that is sustainable in the long-term instead of just thinking about the now. Think for the future version of you.
2) Look for what is selling right now, and what has a lot of searches. "Tailor your [product] to meet that demand."

3) You want to have a product image that makes people say "I WANT THAT!!"
4) There are a lot of great products but no one buys them because they are poorly marketed.

5) Learning how to market products on the internet is a great transferable skill to making money in general.

6) Once you become an expert in a field, you can then charge 4 consultation.
