within one day of Soleimani assassination, Reuters reported a sinister meeting in Baghdad in mid-October, which had been preceded by supposed scheme to move "more sophisticated weapons - Katyusha rockets and shoulder-fired missiles" to Iran. reuters.com/article/us-ira…
/ This was presumably leaked by US military. One has to ask whether this is Curveball or Christopher Steele quality "intelligence" i.e. someone telling the intel services what they want to hear, or alternatively, a legend fabricated by US intel to help sell Soleimani killing
/ in Feb 2007, when US was previously ratcheting up alarm about Iranian activity in Iraq, General Odierno told USA Today that Iran was supplying "Katyusha rockets, armor-piercing RPGs" - exactly same allegation as Oct 2019 meeting. (Also asserted IEDs). web.archive.org/web/2007040123…
/ at the time (Jan-Feb 2007), the primary problem faced by US in Iraq came from AlQaeda in Iraq surge (see Dec 2006 map below).
/ in George Bush's State of Union, Jan 10, 2007, cbsnews.com/news/full-tran… , Bush blamed Iran for providing "material support for attacks on American troops".
/ up to then, blame for attacks had been almost entirely (and reasonably) attributed to local resistance. Blaming Iran for deaths of US soldiers in Iraq grew from a mere passing commment in 2007 until today, it's as though it's been incorporated into US Oath of Allegiance.
/ in Dec 2006, resistance was almost entirely in Sunni areas controlled by AlQaeda- which was fiercely opposed by Iran and Soleimani. While Iran may well have supplied arms to Shia militia, it is implausible that they supplied arms to Sunni resistance, who caused most casualties
/ the Feb 1, 2007 article, which quoted Odierno on supposed Iranian role in supplying weapons to Iraqi resistance, said that US officials had "promised to provide evidence" of Iranian activity, but the promised report was "delayed".
/ I've looked hard for promised follow-through report providing evidence of Iranian activity, but it appears that the promised report was never delivered. Even tho the promised report was never provided, the allegation seems to have stuck and to have been relied on thereafter
