Today in things I don't want to have to explain to people whose job it is to know them: tax credits don't do shit for many to most disabled people
People on SSI do not have enough money to benefit from a tax credit. Its under $800/month y'all. Which is far below the poverty line. But people on SSI do not pay federal income taxes if they don't have a part time job .
If they do have a part time job they pay more than billionaires do but that's a problem not solved by a tax credit. A slightly larger refund isn't going to improve your life when you're still living on under $1000/month.
I admit to not knowing the rules on SSDI but as it is also means tested, just slightly less dire poverty, I'm sure a fucking tax credit isn't improving the lives of those who became disabled later much either
So this kind of policy is built with a very specific caregiver in mind: the kind that gets paid $100k/year to make documentaries about how she wants to kill her disabled kid. But! Most caregivers aren't wealthy!
Disabled children can get SSI and Medicaid. Medicaid is the only thing that pays for many services. But these are means tested programs!
There are parents who must turn down better paying jobs bc to make more money would be to lose SSI and Medicaid for their kids, & thus services.
If you qualify for means tested programs, a goddamn tax credit just isn't going to improve your life that much! There's not enough money day to day! A bigger refund is nice but waiting for the refund is stressful! And there's always another expense or emergency!
A fucking tax credit as disability plan is insulting to basically everyone it's allegedly "for", with the exception of people with too much damn money, who aren't paying their share of taxes anyway.
