Some #OscarNoms thoughts that are sure to change over the next few weeks. A thread.

General thought 1: I LOVE awards season. Telling stories well is a key component to cultural change. Honoring people is a blast. Sure, it's silly to compare art, but it's a valuable exercise.
General thought 2: Awards also allow for a secondary incentive to invest in unique and different films, aside from $$$$. It's one of the primary reasons we get more than just the latest Disney crowd pleaser.
General Thought 3: The Academy continues to struggle with diversity. More on that to come. But, there is going to be a long, painful evolution to fight those built in systematic biases.
On to the nominations! Some minor thoughts. John Williams gets his 52ND nom! Of the shorts I've only seen Kitbull, which is great, Parasite will run away with International, and it's extremely rare for best picture not to get an editing nom. So OUATIH and 1917 just took a hit.
Let's start here. HOW IS APOLLO 11 NOT NOMINATED?!?! This is two years in a row the best doc (imo) didn't even get nominated. What gives? I'd reple it for The Cave, which is GREAT, but Apollo 11 is better. Honeyland will win. I'm good that.
Interesting stuff. I support the Klaus and I Lost My Body nominations (both on Netflix btw) and honestly Frozen 2 just wasn't good enough (though I'd still have it over Missing Link). Rooting for Toy Story 4 here, and I think it will win.
Where. Is. Glasgow? Stand Up is fine but Glasgow is amazing. Also Beyonce missing is fascinating. I honestly think Into the Unknown is astonishing. So that's my fav, but I think Elton will win here.
Knives out. KNIVES OUT!! KNIIIIIIIIIVESSSS OOOOOOOOOUUUUUUTTT!!!!!

I think Quentin wind this.
So glad to see The Two Popes here. Such a great screenplay. I think this will and should go to Greta for the way she made such a known story so fresh.
More Two Popes love, and some Tom Hanks love. This is Pitt's year though. Personally I think Hanks is the best performance of this crew. But I'm good with Pitt.
The Academy loves Kathy Bates, don't they? Laura is on a speeding train to Oscar town, but Florence Pugh has my heart here.
Joaquin has this. And I think that's right. In fact I love all these noms. Jonathan Pryce is INCREDIBLE in Popes, and he deserves to be here. Sandler was good but these five were great. Even De Niro couldn't crack this stacked year. Antonio and Leo also spectacular.
I Iove Cynthia Erivo and Zell, but Lupita should have been here. I can only assume those who think Theron doesn't deserve this haven't seen the movie. She's astonishing. She's my vote for best. But somehow this is Zell's year. She was good, but it's Oscar bait at it's baitiest.
This is silliness. I'd have Gerwig, Heller, and Wang (and many others) above Phillips. The others are fine, but the direction is the weakest part of Joker. I'm rooting for Bong here, but I think Mendes takes it.
Look, I liked Ford v Ferrari but that was Knives Out's slot. Sigh. I get the Joker stuff but I'd have swapped Two Popes in for that. Otherwise this is a great lineup. Parasite is my choice, but I think the Academy's choice will be 1917. I'm good with any... except Joker.
Overall, aside from the usual nonsense it's a pretty great field. Stay tuned for details on how to get your votes in for the #Sposcars and we will see you Oscar weekend for the live show!
