I’ve been pondering on the impact of huge corporate layoffs on society at large. It is deeper than most can see from their end. For us doing altruistic social work, we feel the impact more. When 2000 immigration officers were laid off, we knew something must be done. #FixSociety
A few felt protests may do the trick but we at @SIAF_NG believes there are better ways to engage. We succeeded at least with 888 being reinstated and today they are 3years on the job instead of adding to the number of the unemployed in the society. #FixSociety
I know a few startups had to lay off about 400 staff of not more and many other organizations including banks have done so in the thousands. The impact of this on society was never considered and I will share a few concerns at least from our perspective. #FixSociety
Imagine someone who in the past 10-15years have been waking up with the witches to clock in only to clock at late in the night. This may have become a culture. Loans May have been secured based on the rights to receive (streams of income based on salary scale), children in school
...thrift society contribution obligation based on allotment received with promise of payback depending solely on same salary. Now all of the sudden that job ceases to exist. Loans were recalled. Streams of income forlorn and everything that used to be fades away...
...imagine how many ongoing home construction will be halted, defaults in rents, thrift society petitions, children out of school, rise in domestic violence due to hubby’s inability to provide and protect the family, rise in civil cases owing to lack of fulfillment of obligations
Imagine the amount of customers police will have paying for the rights of another to be abused because they want to secure the rights to get what is theirs as earlier promised by the defaulter. Imagine the rise of crime by children out of school whose future may be truncated.
Imagine the rise in volume of calls for help and thousands of burning candles with no help in sight. Imagine the kind of society you and your children will have to live in because someone or some organizations made an executive decision. Think about this for a while. #FixSociety
The cold splash of reality is that our society and the workspace is shrinking. I said years ago that the traditional jobs we once banked on may no longer exist by 2023. We’re no foxes or donkeys conditioned to an imaginary harness or invisible fence. We can reinvent ourselves.
There is a reason why employment age has been reducing. Businesses will be more focused on millennials whose work ethics are more casual and contract based than the generation that believes in pensions and gratuity just like their parents. Our world is changing. #FixSociety
While we may not be able to force any business to retain their long serving staffers, we can at least tame the spate of disengagement and influence the ethics of the process. There must be a cushioning and a process through which people can be helped to transit. #FixSociety
Job losses come with a huge emotional baggage. “What will people say?” as a common societal phenomenon rubs in the emotional distress. The sudden change in status of most will take time to adjust to. How do they break it to their kids? Some may need to change church. #FixSociety
We as an organization will however engage the vulnerable in society (we are all in this bracket now) by ensuring we ameliorate the hurt and hardship that may come with this. We will create programs and platforms that will ease the transition into other fields for the affected.
If you will be interested in registering for this programs and join the platform that will connect you to your next employer or help strategically position you to showcase your gift to the world, please let us know so we can accommodate you in our plan in the next few weeks.
...End of Celestial Observation...
There will always be a new Pharaoh who wouldn’t be interested in the impact of Joseph on the economy of the Egypt he inherited, thus may implement a inimical policy against the Israelites that’ll no doubt lead to an Exodus. There’s no point clinging to the certainty under chains.
“Nti ga-anụ ihe abụghị ma ọ ha ka okpu ata.” —The ear must not assume the size of a farmer's hat before it can perform the duty of hearing. Too much persuasion is not necessary to convince a sensible man to do the right thing; A word is enough for the wise. #ilu
