I want to address this:
- I’m embarrassed & I apologize for what I said in this tweet from 2011
- 9yrs ago I didn’t have the language to describe trans people or issues correctly
- I’ve learned a lot & I continue to learn how best to be an ally
- I will continue to fight bigotry

- My apology is to the trans community, not @AfraidAnonymous who found that tweet.Their feed makes it clear they’re not an ally
- I don’t delete tweets.Go through my archive
- I’ve worked hard to be a feminist who is a comrade to all hurt by patriarchy & its attendant oppressions

- It isn’t the responsibility of trans people to teach me or anyone else anything. But I’ve learned a lot over the past 9yrs
- I will continue to ensure that my feminism is as intersectional as possible
- I hope I know more in 9 yrs from now

- what upsets me too about my transphobic tweet from 2011 is that I wrote it with both my arms in casts, 3wks after Egyptian riot police broke them & sexually assaulted me
- I’m not excusing my transphobia back then but reminding that we must see our common enemy: patriarchy

- it’s a reminder of the importance of intersectionality
- I should have connected the violence I was subjected to to the violence subjected onto trans women as having the same source: patriarchy & the violence of cis men

- I have worked hard to make those intersectional connections
- And today I fight transphobia because I have learned that it is one of the oppressions used by patriarchy.
- To be a revolutionary, I must fight against all of patriarchy’s oppressions, including transphobia.

To transphobes:
- bigotry is hurtful & dangerous
- it is important & possible to learn from unexamined bigotry
- it is important to see & fight internalized bigotry
- trans women are not the threat.
- Cis men & the entitlement patriarchy gives them are.
