Now in Salt Lake City. Being asked about Prince Harry and the Duchess leaving UK. Apparently some compare this to Edward and Wallis Simpson. Totally different cases. The issue today is a complex one known technically as "a racist onslaught by the British Press" ...
... this is further compounded by panels of the stale, male and pale trying to explain why it isn't racism. Of course it is and the British press have brought shame to the United Kingdom. They are a disgrace.
PS. I do like Salt Lake City. First time here, really friendly vibe about the place.

Most things that we call maps in business aren't actually maps ... they are graphs.

You can tell by simply moving components and looking for whether the context changes.

In a map, any movement changes context.
the key distinction with a graph is that in a map, space has meaning. It's this which allows us to explore and to learn patterns.

It's also why you cannot move a component without changing the meaning of the map.
In order for space to have meaning then you need to have some form of anchor (i.e. North), position relative to the anchor (this is north of that) and consistency of movement (i.e. heading north doesn't mean you're heading south).

Me : Do you mean in terms of company turnaround, billions in efficiency, hundreds of millions made or lives saved?
X : Yes
Me : All of them.
X : Can you give examples?
Me : Why do you want examples?
X : So, I can tell if it's worth doing?
Me : Is the environment in which you operate the same as others?
X : Probably not.
Me : Then examples are meaningless. All are context specific.
X : But I don't know what mapping will do for me.
Me : No-one does until you've mapped it.
X : But is the investment worthwhile?
Me : You will never know until you've mapped a space. It only costs you time, so try it is all I can recommend.
X : But what if the map is wrong?
Me : All maps are wrong. By sharing with others you aim to create a better map.

One of my goals this year was to be more aware of the diversity (or lack thereof) of my source list. To that end, I've been tracking (as best I can) the gender and race of everyone I quote in my stories.
In the interest of accountability, some stats:
Overall, of the ~400 people I quoted this year, 42% were women and 15% were people of color. Close to half were white men.
Note that "race" is in many cases my own best guess -- I didn't always ask people about their racial identity. On gender, I did track people who identified as non-binary, but the numbers aren't large enough to present here.

One cold night in winter of 2003 I was Chief Resident @RCHMelbourne & I was asked to give a talk to potential paed residents...there were also some of that year's residents & Director of Physician Training @margot_nash pushed them: "surely there's some bad things about paeds?"
One particularly great resident - who had gone on to amazing things and just completed his PhD- talked about how much he loved the job but he said:
"I do drive to work each day and know I hurt children"

That changed the course of my career.
He was right.

In 2003 that was still the elephant in the room of paediatrics.

In the years that followed a huge amount of work happened around the world.

1/ I won't cover the background of the Trump-Flynn relationship in this thread. Flynn advised Trump from August 2015 through his firing in February 2017, and Trump was in contact with him until at least April 2017. All this is covered in PROOF OF COLLUSION—link in my Twitter bio.
2/ I'm also going to assume readers have some basic familiarity with the scope of Flynn's collusive ties to Russia, Turkey, and several Middle Eastern nations. I'll certainly readdress these topics as necessary, but again, I leave it to PROOF OF COLLUSION to do the heavy lifting.

I've been thinking about #PlanS a lot since the announcement. I've been reflecting on my experience with the foundation's policy implementation. Random thoughts:

I agree & think that there is enough funder experience in #openaccess policy implementation to successfully implement this. While it's important to critically review each new policy development the community that wants to see change really needs to support any effort to change
It can be scary being first in something - however it can also reaffirm that need for change. So far I haven't seen many examples of open access being a detriment to research. For PlanS this isn't a single entity, but an entire coalition, which is quite impressive.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
