This is one of the better examples of how he actually spoke. You get the language of the pulpit but also the coolness of the pastor in the front room, the teacher and politician. It is what used to be called rhetoric.
He was 39. I think that gets forgotten.
Lawyers don’t speak this well. Drawing you forward in the argument, anticipating and precluding opposition, all in concise and compelling language. It is a hell of a thing.
I think it's fair to say a word about Bobby too, in that his announcement of Dr. King's death is with Gettysburg and "I Have a Dream" with the greatest feats of American rhetoric, or rhetoric anywhere.
I can add nothing to it but to say he was aware when the plane took off Dr. King had been shot. They heard of his death on landing. Bobby prepared notes on the plane but no one, nobody knew he would mention Jack. He never spoke of Jack.
I encourge you to watch the full speech. That's all.
For those of you who see this who otherwise might not, I’d like to offer advice which serves me well and is, I think, in keeping: study history, learn to debate, and learn to dish it out and take it.
