A reminder that BIPOC children are often perceived as far older than they really are, so as to justify their mistreatment by authority figures.

This is the baby face of a child who was assumed to be 16 and then handcuffed by police.
Remember Tamir Rice? Another 12 yr old child. His murder by police was excused in part because he was assumed to be an adult.

The removal of childhood itself from BIPOC children is one of the bleakest and most insidious aspects of white supremacy.

This is a bias our institutions and authority figures MUST acknowledge so that we can FINALLY move towards ending it.

First, it’s about listening, specifically listening to the words pts use to describe their health/bodies. I consciously take note of the words pts use and reflect those words back, eg: “this sort of condition can cause the feeling you’re having in your waterworks.” /2
I know some HCPs prefer anatomical terms for unambiguity, and my response to that is: use both!

Combining the pts term’s with clinical terms in a fluid way takes some practice, but is well worth it: “a stone in your kidney can make your waterworks feel very irritated.” /3

Every yr @CdnWIM holds a #WomenInMedicine conference.

And every yr, women have to listen to male colleagues complain that there's no equivalent conference for men in medicine.

This is a THREAD on allyship.
Someone recently asked to trade her call shift to attend the conference (a very common type of request amongst colleagues in a hospital or clinic) and here is the response that was CC'D TO THE ENTIRE DEPT:
"I’d be happy to switch but I just can’t seem to confirm the dates for the Canadian Men in Medicine conference. I heard they had found an igloo north of Inuvik willing to host it but then with climate change they were thinking they might have to reschedule. I’ll let you know.”

I'm in a procrastinating mood today trying to avoid the writing/charting/chores I should be doing. So what better time to show everyone my nerdy collection of vintage women cyclist images?
I'm basically obsessed with the point in history when bikes became a tool of liberation for women.

In the late 1800's, there was lots of experimentation with bike styles, but it wasn't until the 1890's when the safety bicycle was developed that women took to cycling in droves.
Cycling fell neatly into the late Victorian fitness craze, when exercise became seen as a healthy and virtuous pursuit.

Bikes were also affordable, easier to maintain than a horse and allowed the kind of mobility and independence that women had rarely experienced before.

Authority is arbitrary, it's socially constructed. IME, autistic people generally need things to be more literal than that, to have substance and make sense. Concepts like authority are flimsy and often without good logic behind them, so we don't understand the reason for them.
This is what I've found so interesting about studying sociology. So many of the concepts and structures in our society are constructed, they're made up. They don't naturally exist. Authority is one such concept.
But autistic people generally seem more resistant to constructed
ideas than allistic people. Concepts like authority are culturally specific and era or even generation specific. That means they're arbitrary, they're not "set in stone". And our brains don't get that. A lot of us won't see the point in upholding / maintaining arbitrary ideas.

UE is itself a very misleading term. It suggests that some explanation has been sought and found lacking, but what it actually refers to is a move that doesn't fit into a category that the researchers can measure based on other data... #PupilExits
...an address is an objective datum available from centralised records, so it constitutes an explanation. A parent not liking the new behaviour policy and taking Jonny to the school down the road is "unexplained" because this explanation can't be coded the same way. #PupilExits
