Timeless things:
When serving food, make sure there are versions not spicy for the kids, be mindful of people's special diets.
Serve the kids 1st, elderly 2nd, ladies 3rd, boys 4th, the men 5th & yourself last. Throw the pets some food and they'll join you in harmony.
Light music in the background so that there is something to quietly enjoy but not so loud that it deters conversations. Always keep an eye out for what the guests are doing on their plate. If you see someone like something, immediately offer them more.
If something isn't to their liking, don't bring attention to it. Try to see what else it is they like and offer them more of that. Keep the conversations cordial and full of humor. Thank all the people who helped make the food, let your guests know there are take home containers.
Be sure to share recipes when asked. Brag about the warmth of the gathering, not your latest selfish accomplishments. If someone couldn't make it, offer to send food for them and tell their friend/loved one they are missed.
Gladly accept compliments with a thank you and a smile but be sure to include others in the praise. Have coffee, tea, and desserts ready for post-meal consumption. PLEASE DON'T CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH OPEN, DON'T TALK WITH FOOD IN YOUR MOUTH.
Thank everyone for coming and ask them to feel free and always welcome to join you for dinner. I tell people all the time, whenever you have a craving for something I happen to make, just send me a text and we'll make it happen. Don't hide the good stuff from your guests.
I guess I was just raised with old-world values. It gets noticed every time because some of these social graces have been lost to the drive-through generation.
