1/This line of attack on Biden is disingenuous & lacks context. Saying he "spent years working to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid" is untrue. The clip Sanders used in his newest attack ad is from a speech @JoeBiden gave on the Senate floor 11/16/95. Context & clips below:
2/In the Winter of 1995 the Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich (R) and the @GOP demanded a ‘balanced budget’ and proposed massive cuts to ‘entitlements’ (changes to Medicare & Medicaid, etc.) and tax cuts for the wealthy. This led to a Nov 13-19, 1995 Government shut down.
3/It was Newt Gingrich who felt those ‘entitlement’ programs (you know the ones that help the most marginalized) had outlived “their usefulness”. This angered Senate Dems. They took to the floor on Nov. 16, 1995. Here's Sen. Kennedy venting his frustration over the proposed cuts.
4/The GOP were trying to add ‘riders’ to resolution bills that would have raised Medicare premiums saying their goal was to ‘eliminate’ the budget in 7yrs by cutting entitlement’ programs. This was all for show as they ran up a $3.294 trillion deficit during Bush’s Presidency.
5/The floor speech Sen. Kennedy gave was the same day that Sen. Tom Daschle (D) (And Joe Biden) gave his speech urging Republicans not to gut Medicare/Medicaid and give tax cuts to the wealthiest as it would exacerbate income inequality under the guise of "balancing the budget."
6/@JoeBiden then proceeded to give the @SenateGOP an economics lesson on why trying to balance the budget in the way that they were was all for show and not in service of the American people. That they could just look at the economic projects before slashing entitlements.
@JoeBiden @SenateGOP 7/The clip Sanders used to attack Joe Biden (below) was clearly taken out of context. Biden was offering to compromise w/ the GOP to keep the government open & balance the budget if they'd 'meet Dems halfway' but it was clear to Biden they had little to no interest in that.
@JoeBiden @SenateGOP 8/Its clear the 1995 Dem Senators fought to keep the government open, wanted a balanced budget as well, but not at the expense of gutting 'entitlements' & giving the rich tax cuts. Not only was Biden not trying to gut Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, he tried to save them.
