President Biden could provide business and household relief by eliminating Trump tariffs: buff.ly/3oXN0v2 @ericadyork Image
Tariffs raise prices and reduce the quantity of goods available to U.S. businesses and consumers, which results in lower incomes, reduced employment, and lower economic output in the United States.
Using the Tax Foundation General Equilibrium Model, we estimated that the Trump administration tariffs would amount to an annual tax increase of $80 billion (the 17th largest tax increase since 1940).

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

By the end of fiscal 2019, almost 1 million people had entered the US illegally.
Over 600,000 of them were either individuals within a family unit or unaccompanied minors—both vulnerable populations that often arrived sick and required more care than #BorderPatrol was set up to provide.

and trade uncertainty: cf40.org.cn/uploads/ZB2019…
2.Maintaining moderate #inflation level. Applying a combined CPI and PPI weighted value as an inflation indicator and setting a 2.5–3% inflation target.
3. Adopting a floating exchange rate and leaving sufficient space for monetary policies. A floating exchange rate is an automatic stabilizer in an #economy. Clean floating or the managed floating with a wide floating band is currently the
optimal arrangement.

Despite firming core #CPI, driven to some extent by the modest pass through of #tariffs, we still think the @federalreserve is set to ease next week.
While headline #CPI only saw a modest increase, core CPI (excluding volatile food and #energy prices) came in at 0.26% month-over-month and 2.4% year-over-year.
Yet the #Fed is likely to both “look through” some degree of #tariff-related price rises, as being potentially temporary, and policy makers will be laser focused on the labor #market, which has slowed somewhat of late.

The trade and economic conflicts between US and#China are evolving simultaneously in five areas: tariff war, investment war, technology war, currency war, and financial war, said CF40 member Yu Yongding. 1/5 cf40.org.cn/uploads/newsle…
Recent developments in the conflicts calls attention to the irrational factors, obviously from the US side, which is more difficult for China to come up with sound policy responses. Hence, China should focus on its core economic interests rather than the #tariffwar.2/5
The 300 billion worth of Chinese goods #Trump threatens to impose 10% more #tariffs on, effective September 1, 2019, are mostly final products including mobile phones (44.6 billion USD), computers (41.1 billion USD), clothing (35.2 billion USD) and toys (25.5 billion USD). 3/5

THREAD:As China-US #trade friction continues to escalate,China must keep its industrial policies, which is exactly what US worries about. The problem is not whether or not to abandon, but what kind of industrial policies should China take, said YuYongding: mp.weixin.qq.com/s/wqH0KqALGhua…
1/5
Industrial policy is China’s “weapon” which sometimes can effectively help improve resource allocation. On the other hand, China should unwaveringly respect the fundamental role of market in allocating resource. 2/5
It is also important to strengthen protection of industrial chains and pay high attention to self-innovation. It is unwise to make concessions in areas concerning China’s core interests in exchange for cancelation of #tariffs imposed by the US. 3/5

Today’s #CPI report, which came in at 0.29% month-over-month and 2.21% year-over-year for core CPI (excluding volatile food and energy prices) gave us a bit to think about regarding the drivers of #inflation in the new economy.
For many years, we’ve seen an #economy driven by efficiencies and persistent pricing pressures on products that no longer display meaningful recurring demand, and ones in which supply chains have been optimized dramatically, reducing the cost to the end #consumer.
Still, the #CPI report displayed broad-based strength. Core goods prices were supported to some extent by the modest pass through of #tariffs, and we also saw increases in some of the more volatile components such as apparel and autos.

While #China’s #export to US has been negatively impacted due to #trade war, that to other countries were less affected, which has been more associated with global demand than shift in industrial chains, according to a recent report by Zhang Bin cf40.org.cn/uploads/ZB2019…
In response to US #tariffs, China has taken reasonable countermeasures to reduce negative effects on its own economy - not target technological products that account for large proportion of imports for which it’s difficult to find substitutes
China’s dependence on some of the US’s #technology-intensive industries is relatively high. It belatedly imposed tariffs on these goods, and the number of specific goods subject to China’s tariffs is relatively small. Image

1. My prediction: As Chinese goods are dumped to get ahead of Trump's #tradewar #tariffs, prices remain low but as inventories drop and demand remains, prices will begin to spike. IMO @POTUS Trump will create high inflation with a business slowdown by first quarter 2020.
2. The key is to keep talking about the Trump GOP being in bed with Putin (eg #MoscowMitch #LeninGradLindsey) and Putin's goal is destruction of US economy. Say it over and over again. So when this predictable result occurs the remaining non-#MAGA GOP will be predisposed to
3. wipe the GOP out in nearly every Senate race. The goal of Democrats holding the @WhiteHouse and ending GOP majorities not only in the House but in the Senate is clearly attainable but @TheDemocrats must remain focused on message. The goal is to not only defeat the @GOP but
