It is quite unfortunate that part of the American Dirt controversy has derived into the "only Mexicans can write about Mexico" vs. "non-MExicans have freedom of speech and we reject cancel culture" faux debate. (1/2)
This pushes to the side the real points: 1. Anyone can write about Mexico as long as they actually know about it. 2. Giving 1 million dollars and the Oprah imprimatur to someone who is far from that standard is an insult to those who actually know. (2/3)
3. That this happened is the result that the same publishers who give a million dollars to books like this do not even bother to look at the work of Mexicans. 4. The Publishing industry manufacture faux best-sellers capitalizing on real issues and are therefore corrupt.

A topic in the American Dirt controversy was the ways in which Mexican, Mexican American and Chicanx literatures are marginalized from publishing. But as a scholar of Mexican literature written in Mexico in Spanish, there are complexities here (thread with book recommendations)
As a I mentioned elsewhere, the Mexican and the Mexican American literary fields are distinct and often even unfamiliar with each other. And the colleagues of #DignidadLiteraria are doing an admirable work in addressing the marginalization of Mexican American lit.
But the fact is that Mexican literature written in Spanish, most of it from Mexico (the literature in indigenous languages is a very complex theme that would require a thread by am expert) is by and large unknown in the US, and was unavailable until very recently.

My final thread on this, since, believe it or not, I do have to go back to my day job as an academic. One thing that has come out of the American Dirt controversy is various list of books by Latinx authors, which is great,
But even these list miss great books by academics and journalists, some Latinx, some not, who have spent years and a great deal of work documenting questions of immigration, the border and Mexico, so here is a short, improvised and non-exhaustive list of great, readable books:

So I have been busy in another controversy, but I have been meaning to chime in on the "Hanging Out" piece on the "literary studies" (quote quote) and how frustrated I felt when reading (a thread) chronicle.com/interactives/h…
I consider @V21collective , @Jeannemarie_1 and @seeshespeak dear friends, and I also love the work of Jonathan Kramnick and Edgar Garcia, so my objections are not to them or to anything they have to say. They all speak thoughtfully from their perspectives
But the framing of these pieces is infuriating. I am sick and tired of the Chronicle and other publications to conflate "The humanities" and "literary studies" with the field of English and Complit. This piece has four English professors and one CompLit professor.

So, with all the AMERICAN DIRT controversy going on, I thought I’d post a little thread about how I was nearly THAT AUTHOR, and how I learned not to be. I’ll title it “I’M WHITING A BOOK!” or “TOSS A COIN TO YOUR SENSITIVITY READER”
Back in 2015, I was hard at work on my second novel, THE RIGHT HOOK OF DEVIN VELMA. It’s set in Los Angeles, and it’s about friendship and fame in the age of social media. My two protagonists were PoC.

Oh, and in case it’s not obvious from my profile picture, I’m Caucasian.
At the time, I thought I was writing with the best of intentions (don’t we all?). I’ve since learned that I was MISintentioned, and I want to talk about how I learned that, so that other folks can too.

At some point can we address that a big part of this American Dirt problem is directly tied to the erasure CentAms + SouthAms by centering Mexican as the main (only?) focus of Latinidad and making Latinx and MX interchangeable in a way no other Latinx groups get to do, or
The outrage rn is merited but also, when people call CentAm, SouthAm or Caribeños "Mexicans" how many of us MXs actually correct + prevent those microagressions towards our sibs? Centering MX as the only experience in Latinidad has this particular brand of racism as a side effect
This shit is going down right as MX turned away a southern border they have militarized and the caravan they turned away were CentAm/SouthAm folks, mostly Hondureños (from the news). These two things are related.

I was amazed, myself, to learn the budgets these people are working with and their access to international
political consultants, law firms, lobbyists, and so forth. I was conflicted within my own thoughts for a long time because I believe there is no other American entrepreneur in recent history who has advocated for legitimate U.S./Mexico technology business, than I have. #USA

Penza is a smart lawyer. According to publicly available information, she studied at Cornell Law School, a private Ivy League University located in Ithaca, New York. Cornell was ranked the #13 law school in America, out of 203 law schools, by U.S. News & World Report, in 2018.
