My final thread on this, since, believe it or not, I do have to go back to my day job as an academic. One thing that has come out of the American Dirt controversy is various list of books by Latinx authors, which is great,
But even these list miss great books by academics and journalists, some Latinx, some not, who have spent years and a great deal of work documenting questions of immigration, the border and Mexico, so here is a short, improvised and non-exhaustive list of great, readable books:

So I have been busy in another controversy, but I have been meaning to chime in on the "Hanging Out" piece on the "literary studies" (quote quote) and how frustrated I felt when reading (a thread) chronicle.com/interactives/h…
I consider @V21collective , @Jeannemarie_1 and @seeshespeak dear friends, and I also love the work of Jonathan Kramnick and Edgar Garcia, so my objections are not to them or to anything they have to say. They all speak thoughtfully from their perspectives
But the framing of these pieces is infuriating. I am sick and tired of the Chronicle and other publications to conflate "The humanities" and "literary studies" with the field of English and Complit. This piece has four English professors and one CompLit professor.

So I think a lot of my friends have been following the controversy with American Dirt. Beyond the brilliant trashing by @lesbrains , the low quality of the book itself and the obvious racial politics, a few points need to be underscore (thread)
first, trash full of nasty stereotypes about Mexico is all over the place. Just watch recent films like Rambo, Peppermint, Sicario, and The Mule, the last two of them praised by critics, as example. So in this sense American Dirt is an unremarkable product of US culture.
What is really astonishing is the enormous investment in this: an bidding war leading to an obscene advance that no Latinx writer would ever dream in getting, very respected writers (including Chicanx writers) positively blurbing the book, an Oprah endorsement, etc.

A few years ago, I was invited by the American Dental Association to speak on this topic. A few salient features of my talk follows. Please note not all may apply to India but at the end people are people everywhere!
The most common reason patients consider legal action against dentists are:
1) Negative comment made by one dentist about work done by another dentist.
2) Patient feeling neglected and unable to reach the dentist for post operative issues, during or after office hours.
3) Being chased for money owed for treatment that was unsatisfactory.

Points to learn:
1) Unless you were involved at every step pre, mid and post treatment refrain from passing negative judgement about other doctors. There is no way for anyone to know for sure what happened.

1: The key here is the reaction of the people.

Most Iraqis don't like the Iranians and the Iranian influence. The anti govt protests there were against a govt controlled by the Iranians and against the Iranians themselves. The PMUs were the ones using snipers to shoot protesters
2: With regards to #Iran, this is a big event that can't go without retaliation. The situation can easily lead to a full scale war. Everybody in the region is now preparing for the eventuality of war.

If conflict starts, It'll be a regional war including Israel, Hezboallah, etc
3: Let's not even talk about the price of oil if conflict starts. This is the oil hub of the world & doesn't matter is a country is self sufficient in oil or not. Oil follows an international price. So if the fireworks go in big scale, oil will skyrocket & the economy 👎

In honour of Greta Thunberg’s odyssey across the Atlantic, I would like to present some notes taken from 2015 when I spent some time in Sweden and concluded it was hell on Earth.

(Not claiming to be an expert on Sweden if there are any errors. These were just my observations)
Important point: I was in Sweden during the winter. The winters are, obviously, brutal in Sweden with about four hours of sun and freezing temperatures. If I had visited in the summer I may have had slightly more positive feelings about the country.

I doubt it though.
Sweden was cold, dark and depressing. We were getting about 5 hours of daylight from 10am till 3pm, and when I ventured up to the frozen wastes of Lapland I was getting about 3 and a half hours of daylight only. Maybe fun for a winter holiday, but I was there to work.
