My final thread on this, since, believe it or not, I do have to go back to my day job as an academic. One thing that has come out of the American Dirt controversy is various list of books by Latinx authors, which is great,
But even these list miss great books by academics and journalists, some Latinx, some not, who have spent years and a great deal of work documenting questions of immigration, the border and Mexico, so here is a short, improvised and non-exhaustive list of great, readable books:
The Land of Open Graves by McArthur "Genius" Fellow Jason deLeón, on the questions of life and death consequence of restrictive immigration policy. ucpress.edu/book/978052028…
We Built the Wall by Eileen Truax, which includes stories of someone actually freeing a crime organization, and people suffering the immigration structures: versobooks.com/books/2606-we-…
Empire of Borders by Todd Miller, on the extraterritorial enforcement of US Law: versobooks.com/books/2908-emp…
The Injustice Never Leaves You by Mónica Muñoz Martínez. on anti-Mexican violence in Texas: hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?is…
The Beast, by Oscar Martinez, the book of record on the migrant rail trail and the violence in it: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/228888/t…
First Stop in the New World, by David Lida, if you actually want to know what Mexico City looks like in lieu of the caricatures available: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/298934/f…
The Interior Circuit by Francisco Goldman if you actually need a second book on Mexico City: groveatlantic.com/book/the-inter…
Imperial, by William T. Vollman, an amazing book on the Californa side of the border: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/300138/i…
Mexican Enough by Stephanie Elizondo Griest, a memoir by a Tejana in Mexico: simonandschuster.com/books/Mexican-…
The Long Honduran Night, by Dana Frank, if you need to know why Hondurans are coming to the US, due to the US-backed coup: haymarketbooks.org/books/1226-the…
Greg Grandin's The End of the Myth, a history of the idea of the border in America. us.macmillan.com/books/97812501…
Bonus one: definitely should know about global Mexican tacos, so Jeffrey Pilcher's Planet Taco. global.oup.com/academic/produ…
Bonus two: Paul Theroux's On the Plain of Snakes, which I find an example of a book from a white American perspective that really bridges US and Mexico perspectives: hmhbooks.com/shop/books/On-…
Bonus three: Aura Xilonen's prodigious novel The Gringo Champion, a really great novel about a migrant that has not registered as much as it should. europaeditions.com/book/978160945…
Bonus four: Hurricane season by Fernanda Melchor, the novel of the year in Mexico three years ago and now available in English: ndbooks.com/book/hurricane…
And every single one of these books, all of which, except for Xilonen, I did not mention in this thread because they are already in this list: texasobserver.org/17-great-books…
