Bernie Sanders is not similar to FDR. FDR consistently recognized the importance of the private sector, and, for better or worse, based a lot of the New Deal programs (the NRA, the AAA, the NLRA) around private business.
Here's an article about FDR's attitude toward the roles of government and business. He wanted to align them instead of set them in competition with each other.

FDR had austerian instincts (which sent the nation into a recession in 1937).

There are some ways that Sanders is worse than FDR, some ways that he's better, and some ways that he's different but it's not yet clear who's better and who's worse. FDR was transformative, and Bernie would be transformative as well. But in different ways.
