Since people are super worried about whether white Americans are even allowed to write about Mexico, here is a thread about white Americans and Brits who wrote amazing books about Mexico admired by Mexicans. So if you want to begin with white writers to learn about Mexico, read:
John Kenneth Turner wrote Barbarous Mexico, a very brave an important exposé of the Porfirio Díaz regime, which the American Press hailed at the time: utpress.utexas.edu/books/turbar
John Reed’s Insurgent Mexico was a great report on the Mexican Revolution amazon.com/Insurgent-Mexi…
Katherine Anne Porter wrote many wonderful texts on Mexico, both fictional and non-fictional loa.org/books/290-coll…
Anita Brenner was essential in the development of Mexico’s Art history store.doverpublications.com/0486423034.html
Alma Reed wrote this spectacular memoir of her time in Mexico utpress.utexas.edu/books/reeper
Graham Greene wrote one of the best novels of the 20th century on Mexico’s Cristero War: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/321542/t…
Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy is just spectacular panmacmillan.com/authors/cormac…
The person who know the most about Mexican food is Diana Kennedy, and she is revered by Mexicans for it latimes.com/food/dailydish…
Lucia Berlin is one of the greatest short story writers in the English language and many of her work are based in Mexico panmacmillan.com/authors/lucia-…
David Lida is a New Yorker who wrote one of the best books out there on Mexico City davidlida.com
And the Paul Theroux book I am happy to recommend left and right hmhbooks.com/shop/books/On-…
There are more, and I am not counting either scholars or the many other foreigners with exceptional books on Mexico in any genre
In fact you should know that readers in Mexico feel proud when a smart foreigner writes intelligent books about our country, just like we hate when they write stupid books too.
And I know that in the racial climate of the US this argument is too nuanced and some people will continue to misrepresent and misinterpret our views on American Dirt
But if you are reading this controversy in good faith, the books above may be a bridge so hopefully after you also give a chance to Latinx and Latin American books.
