i've just been incensed constantly lately about the god damn democrats but this reminds me that not a single person in our entire government is a normal person except bernie sanders and like 3 other people
like i was literally, earlier this day, hollering out loud about how the democrats are so fucking weird, they just say WEIRD SHIT all the time and act like it's normal. they're just SO WEIRD. THEY'RE JUST SO GODDAMN WEIRD.
they're constantly putting up these candidates because of their "track records" and what they've ostensibly done for the party and i'm like. i've never heard of these fucking people! i don't even know who joe biden is! i am if anything *more* informed than your average voter!
i didn't know who hillary clinton was before 2016! i vaguely thought bill had been married. i had no idea she was a senator! i thought she came out of the woodwork! that's how *everyone* feels about *every single Democrat* but they have this LUDICROUS notion of dynastic politics
they're constantly talking like somehow we owe it to specific senators to Promote them to President, and then naming people most of the country, I swear to god, have never heard of
I've never heard of *anyone*! I didn't even know barack obama existed before his campaign! I don't give a shit what anyone's track record was! I am a normal voter and the democrats do not give a shit.
they absolutely refuse to court people like me, who just want to hear a reassuring voice say they will fix things. Instead they're just *completely* self-obsessed, utterly fixated on these bizarre internal notions of dynastic succession that none of us give two fucks about
But when you look at, like, *everything else they do* it all kind of comes into focus - they're *constantly* fucking weird, across the board. Both parties, really, but the Democrats spend their weirdness on fewer outright crimes.
None of these people are normal. None of them do anything like we do. Maybe it's the money, maybe it's the rich families, maybe they just exited college directly into the political machine. They're utterly isolated for one reason or another, and they are *bad representatives*
We constantly mock these people for doing shit that we don't understand, and there's value in that! it's not unreasonable to feel like "hey, this person whose actions are absolute nonsense to me might not be a great representative." their job is to *understand us.*
I think most of them fail this test. Our presidents certainly, but most of our elected officials, across the board, have no idea what their constituents are like.
i guess to put it bluntly, if you don't understand how mortifying it is to be seen drinking what appears to be chocolate syrup at your public job then you can't possibly understand anything having to do with concepts of acceptable public behavior.
can someone who is so sheltered that they don't get why this would be seen as bad understand the impact of other actions one takes in public, and what people will think of them? Can they draft laws accordingly?
It's not a long jump from "oh who cares if i drink syrup in public" to responding to complaints about wage theft with "just walk into your bosses office and demand he pay you what you deserve!" Like, a complete lack of understanding of peoples internal state.
Anyway, I could be reading more into this, but idk. It's just one in an extremely long series of "what the fuck" moments with politicians.
anyway i absolutely hate this, i despise it, i am *extremely* chapped by having to say this, but it really is some The Office bullshit. like everyone is standing on desks hollering and bernie sanders is shouting "what are you dumbasses doing? why are you up there? we have jobs!"
i don't like depicting reality in terms of media bullshit! but our political system has *actually* been driven to a cartoon state. there's very little else to compare it *to.*
you know that notion that seinfeld is a show about four normal people living in some kafkaesque nightmare where social norms are violently changing around them but everyone treats them like they're out of their minds if they comment on it? that.
being at all normal or honest in our political business must be full of wild shit. finding a kitkat with a huge toothy bitemark taken out of the side in the office fridge and all your coworkers just look blankly and act like you're out of your mind for thinking it's weird
we shit on the media constantly for turning our politics into a weird E! entertainment news thing but like. maybe all these strange fuckers started it
senator in 1982: oh, i know we were supposed to talk about taxes, but let me show you my collection of skulls first
reporter: <nodding>
you absolutely know i don't have a problem with strangeness! and if you didn't, i assure you, i don't! it's great! but it's an essential social skill to know when and where it's appropriate to display it to absolute strangers who will *not* understand it.
it's not "never" and it's not "always" and it's *entirely goddamn reasonable* to expect all of our representatives and officials to have this skill
