1/ Do you mentor or are you: a learner wanting to improve exam scores? Dx the reason for low test scores in today’s #MedEdMethodsMonday!

2/ Self-Regulated Learning Microanalytic Assessment and Training (SRL-MAT) - a tool that can identify 6 test-taking problems, described by Dr. Andrews @williamkellymd @GenesseyFlint & Dr. Dezee from @USUhealthsci in @AcadMedJournal

tiny.cc/SRLtool
3/ The tool is used between a mentor & learner in a 60-min session.

The learner 1st reads & thinks aloud while going through a vignette appropriate for their level, with the actual question and answers covered.

They then talk through a Question Review Form:
4/ Questions 1-4 assess learners’ illness scripts, dx schema, and #clinicalreasoning

Questions 5-6 allow learners to self-assess their confidence with their approach to the clinical scenario.
5/ Once the vignette question is revealed, learners generate an answer and self-assess their confidence with questions 7&8.

Reveal the vignette answers choices. Questions 9-11 ask learners to rate confidence in their prior answer & gives them an option to change their answer.
6/ Reveal the correct answer. Learners then talk through questions 13-15 to identify why they did or didn’t arrive at the correct answer and areas for improvement.

Repeat with additional vignettes to identify which of the next 6 test-taking deficiency may exist...
7/ Test-taking deficiencies:

1. Lack of script recognition
2. Lack of script specificity
3. Premature closure
4. Underconfidence
5. Inappropriate causal attributions
6. Inappropriate adaptive inferences

8/ To learn more about this SRL method & potential solutions to the 6 test-taking problems, check out the @AAIMOnline #AIMW2020 #facdev workshop led by the authors.

We’ve used this in the @YaleMed Primary Care Residency & it has been insightful.
