I am so frustrated with the misogyny that is getting perpetuated.

Reported to me by an immigrant guy - who is assimilating to norms - on what is common in a neurosurgery resident office:

Talking about girlfriends’ “b**bs”

....in front of female PAs and med students
1/
Describing women with multiple sexual partners as “human gutters”

U.S. professors, tell him the law has become “gynocentric”

that men need to be afraid and are falsely accused

@TIMESUPHC @choo_ek @janevandis @arghavan_salles

Why #HeforShe matters

2/
Let’s even set aside outrage for a sec

How can you speak of women as “human gutters”, discuss your girlfriend’s “b**bs” at work in front of female med students and PAs

AND claim you are oppressed and need to be scared?

You *are still* openly engaging in sexual harassment
This is the level of logic of those claiming there is a war on men/boys:

I will use gender-specific body shaming

Further, I will use my position of authority & rank to perpetuate sexism (+ homophobia)

But I am the victim here

These are people allowed to operate on brains
4/
Immigrant men who actually MAY (or may not) start off less misogynist

Are taught what they must acclimate to in order to fit in & win approval in male dominated settings

Does not excuse any of it

However, I see a ramping up of misogyny in some immigrant men trying to fit in
5/
Do you think the full professor with international full pay patients and lots of grants will be held accountable?

Or will the junior resident or research assistant with dark skin and an accent be reported and held accountable?

At a time “those” immigrants are “rapists”
6/
I am NOT excusing any of it

Accountability MUST start from the top

Disparity in who held accountable must end

Be honest of source of it - this is not foreign misogyny but homegrown and actively perpetuated.

7/
We know this history

Yes, to maintain “social order” of race superiority after the official end of slavery, dark skinned men were terrorized by, often tortured and killed

yes, after false reports

men’s rights are conflating that with current #MeToo

americanbar.org/groups/litigat…
This was never “feminism” - this was always racism and social control

“woman who in 1955 accused 14-year-old Emmett Till of sexually harassing her in a Mississippi store, leading to the black teen’s gruesome murder, fabricated her account of that day”
9/
theundefeated.com/features/being…
In fact, it was always about “purity” - race purity, purity of women

“This contradicted statements she made during the slain teen’s trial where she testified that Till ‘grabbed her hand … clasped her waist, and … told her that he had been with white women before.’”

10/
So when a neurosurgeon in NYC describes women’s vaginas as “human gutters”

he is using the same “purity” concept (and language) of the KKK

Feminism and equity movements have rejected that kind of body shaming or shaming culture

Race itself is a social construct anyhow

11/
Rape is rape

Harassment is harassment

Color of skin of who does it does not matter

BUT it ends up mattering in accountability mechanisms based on accused and the victim

theintercept.com/2019/12/03/dea…
Which women are the ones “protected” and valued, btw?

Not black and brown women.

Not even allowed to protect selves in most extreme cases of being bought by a man in sex trafficking case.

fox59.com/2019/08/07/cyn…

13/
Do all women have equal access to rights to self defense in cases of domestic violence?

When I served in various healthcare leadership positions, I saw this trend of who believed - which women are able to exercise rights

14/

vox.com/2018/8/25/1777…
This doc served a mere two years for drugging and molesting a patient, one of many such instances, including pediatric patients, it was later found.

Notice race of victim vs perpetrator.

Does believing someone’s vagina is a “gutter” enable this?

nytimes.com/2017/01/23/nyr…
This is personal on MANY levels

Distrust of doctors affects MY ability to be trusted

I have been in leadership positions: frankly, I see WOC believed less and yes, dark skinned or immigrant men are scared

WOC leaders less believed/effective in roles

yes, own #MeToo
16/
These cultures are driven from the top. There simply is NOT accountability.

This is from my alma mater

bostonmagazine.com/news/2019/09/1…

And yes, it was in Boston an insurance exec, after a networking event, emailed me he’d never seen an *ss my color naked before

17/
Unpacking that

That is a reference to
gender
AND
race

Not just reduced to a body part
But of a specific color

Like exotic trophy kill on a wall

Given Epstein ties to Boston, made me wonder later, was this someone who “placed orders” to select a woman? Could be...

18/
2 other situations: references to “arranged marriage” in a c-suite role negotiation

misperception that I am an oppressed Muslim woman, used to being controlled

Do you think I will ever be taken seriously if I accept that role? How can I effectively run Medical Affairs?

19/
So, yes, I turn down many roles men may take and face fewer issues.

I DON’T want to spend my time on this. I want to:

vaccinate kids
reduce maternal mortality
reduce burnout
improve interoperability
improve access
make care more patient-centered
improve quality
etc, etc
20/
Reason I get these offers is cuz - check my record - I have never filed any report on my own behalf

All of this is not specific enuf to be identifiable

I know I could set an example of reporting - I have for others

I set an example by being in leadership positions

21/
Is that really “success”, tho?

Why is it either/or?

Why should I obtain a title and handsome salary, often on the public dime, be treated in a way that makes me LESS effective?

Why are we STILL perpetuating this form of waste?

When we have SO many problems to solve?

22/
Frankly, the most hopeful, rewarding, inspiring experience I had in 2019, the most real conversations on #gender & #intersectionality for #equity, were during a recent trip to #Pakistan at my alma mater, @AKUGlobal invited by @ayesha_mian1 @amian74 @AdilHaiderMD @ELAMProgram
/23
Best was panel led by @BinaShah: entrepreneurs - women & men - spoke on the business case for #equity

We cannot narrow the conversation to only harm, entitlement, or fault

We need solutions and OUTCOMES

That takes more than only title or authority, but RESOURCES. 💰 💰💰

/24
What I heard in #Pakistan: “how do I run a business, as a (female) #entrepreneur in a developing country (=wide disparities)

What is that?

= women CREATING resources that allow BOTH doing right thing/equity AND profit - no margin, no mission

#Sustainability of mission
25/
discussion included #intersectionality

What do dads need? How can men be able to better support wives?

What does the elderly or sick worker need?

What does someone need, caring for a parent?

It takes a village
Everyone in the village needs support to support each other
26/
I post this a lot, will post it in this thread too

No, women are not the Giving Tree: self deplete to provide to others

What happens to this woman after her last feather plucked?

Women can and MUST create value

AND share in profits

To do that, own yourself (brand)

27/
Epstein types have taken control of science and healthcare. And this is who scientists and administrators woo.

That is the invisible “top” of academia now, especially given cuts to public research dollars.

That culture filters down to every level.

wired.com/story/the-prob…

28/
From @nytimes on who makes decisions on research priorities

Privatization itself is not necessarily right or wrong

What *is* wrong is that access to these donors & attending these events means tolerating pretty unsavory things

That sets culture

nytimes.com/2014/03/16/sci…

/29
I know more I move into business side of things, more I will get exposed to this

This exclusive invite-only healthcare conference with multiple invite-only surrounding events is a prime example

But what is the alternative?
If not at table, on menu

healthexec.com/topics/leaders…

30/
Or will I encounter more in business?

blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2019/10/18…

This is waste in healthcare. We cannot afford these distractions

It needs to stop

We MUST stop passing this on to new generations

Ending it requires accountability

#MedEd #MedTwitter #WomenInMedicine #PROWD

31/
I want to be at the table, not on the menu - so have pivoted

I am sick and tired of a brand of feminism in the U.S. that is about self advancement or tribalism, even maintaining race/social order

We need inclusive, intersectional approaches

givingcompass.org/article/inters…

32/
Among those talking on/for women is Christina Sommers (her points used by hate groups per @splcenter)

claiming “fake news” on wage gap

Yes, it exists, even after accounting for other factors

@TIMESUPHC @TIMESUPNOW should reinforce not a “myth”

salon.com/2018/03/13/4-o…

33/
This matters as seemingly small gaps compound over a lifetime

When I was staff or when in c-suite, saw how annual 2-3% increase of small gap led to wide differences over 5-10 years

Wealth generation = opportunities, options, risk tolerance

psmag.com/economics/the-…

34/
Instead, let’s have women, minorities, those with disabilities paid fairly

treated with respect

able to generate wealth

so as to inform and influence through philanthropy

no more Epstein types infiltrating academia and science

have right values

tbf.org/donors/donor-s…

35/
Like:

“Fatima al-Fihri ..Muslim woman ..founded first known university: the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco. Guinness World Records ..the oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in world”

woman + wealth = outcomes

stylist.co.uk/visible-women/…

36/
Or my own aunt @nusrat61 an outspoken, courageous, effective leader for women’s health in #Pakistan dealing w/ high maternal mortality, low literacy, few resources

Here speaking about uteruses and STDs

Yeah, in my fam you see random IUDs floating about

#womeninleadership

37/
Am so SO grateful med school @AKUGlobal was a safe for me as a med student in terms of never encountering ANY inappropriateness from faculty

(at least I did not)

where I had inspiring examples of #WomenInMedicine and #womeninleadership

Unlike

38/
There are many waves/versions of feminism in U.S., specific to U.S. history

America, American healthcare do better, be better than your past and your present

We have big, complex problems to work on and we need every single resource for solutions
