The UK Government released a Brexit "transition check" tool! Answer a series of questions to find out what you have to do to get ready for the end of the transition period. It spits out an alarmingly long list of tasks for even the most mundane situations.

It has gems like this, where you have the (implicit) option of saying you're never going to travel outside the borders of the UK ever again for the rest of your life...
The advice it lists at the end is mainly just reheated versions of the "no deal" advice from months ago, but with a few words changed. Nevertheless, it's worth doing the exercise, if only to see just how drastically "full-on Brexit" will hit us.
Why not give the tool a spin, and flag some of the horrors it turns up?

The UK was a member of the EU (and its precursor) for 17,196 days.

For 17,196 days, we had the full might of the EU's experienced negotiating team on our side.

Nobody in our government has ever known any other way. So they are utterly unprepared for an adversarial relationship.
The EU for its part are not being vindictive or punitive or in any way unfair.

They are simply treating us as exactly what we became on 31 January: a third country, outside the EU family of member nations.

Some regrets, absolutely. But little sentimentality. Just pragmatism.
Understand that, and everything they are saying and doing makes 100% perfect sense.

Fail to grasp it, and you are guaranteed disaster.

As we're approaching new Brexit negotiations at the beginning of the #transition period, let me give you a feel for current #German attitudes to the #UK, its politics & departure from the #EU.
2/Temperate
It's important to understand the debate in #Germany about #Brexit has been much less emotional than in the UK. We've been astounded at the decision. On balance, we believe the benefits of membership outweigh the EU's deficiencies & Brexit isn't in national interest.
3/Interested
We followed the UK's debate, w/ peaks of interest last yr during the struggle between government & parliament &, again, during the elections. (Your choice has, forgive me, caused some amusement.)
We also realised that #Brexit is unavoidable. We welcome the certainty.

Let's call it "infinite transition to avoid the Backstop"
The Tories have made a load of noise about the Backstop for a long time. They have made it *the* problem.

The best they came up with was to replace it with "alternative arrangements" but could not articulate what those were.
The new wheeze is combine changes to the Brexit transition period with the elimination of the Backstop.

Instead of the Backstop being needed when Britain's EU transition period ends at end of 2020/22, the transition wouldn't be time limited.

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
