Current German attitudes to #Brexit
As we're approaching new Brexit negotiations at the beginning of the #transition period, let me give you a feel for current #German attitudes to the #UK, its politics & departure from the #EU.
We followed the UK's debate, w/ peaks of interest last yr during the struggle between government & parliament &, again, during the elections. (Your choice has, forgive me, caused some amusement.)
We also realised that #Brexit is unavoidable. We welcome the certainty.
We've been surprised by the fervour of rejection, anger & hate towards the EU & France/Germany. We didn't understand the extent of resentment lingering in the UK. Our attitude towards the UK is *entirely different. It's painful it is so misrepresented in the media.
Neither before nor after #Brexit has there been any ill-will, wish for revenge or anger towards the UK. We accept your decision & proceed on this basis.
There is no reason to fear the decision to brexit will translate into revenge during the upcoming negotiations.
However! There's very little trust in the current UK government, largely fuelled by #BorisJohnson's buffoon reputation & appearance & the populist campaign he ran to be elected. We're surprised his slogans were successful. He's not considered serious or trustworthy
The German approach to the trade negotiations/transition will be regretful, unexcited, pragmatic, w/ low-key reporting or interest, I expect.
We feel reasonably well prepared. We also feel well-represented by the EU's negotiators.
So we're pretty much unworried.
