I'm old enough to remember the 1992 presidential election. Tom Harkin swept the Iowa caucus. Paul Tsongas narrowly won the most votes and split the delegates in New Hampshire a week later. Then Jerry Brown won in Maine, and Bob Kerry won in South Dakota.
On March 3rd, Tsongas won in three states and Harkin two (the other primary candidates got one each). If you don't remember these names, it's because the ultimate nominee, Bill Clinton, didn't start really gaining ground until Super Tuesday, after a string of initial losses.
Anything can happen at this point. Vote your passion this primary. It's not too late to learn about the candidates if you're undecided. Don't let the media's short memory or hyperbole-for-clicks tell you otherwise. The nomination is not a foregone conclusion.
This has two implications: 1) show up at the polls, even if you think it won't affect the outcome, and 2) show up for your candidate, even if the media is acting like they don't exist. Either way, show up. It's good practice for showing up again in November.
(For context, the turnout at the Iowa caucus was down from the previous two, despite big gains in turnout during the mid-terms.)
RIP my mentions, yikes. Seriously, folks, be kind. This thread isn’t an invitation to fight, campaign, or re-litigate 2016. Let’s all agree we need to GOTV and leave it at that.
