Picture over text: write whole story in 300-400 words, add some text around text around the figures, add icons and emphasis (bold, accent colours)
90% of people don't really read, posters is there to catch people's eye so they talk to you

Consider poster as visual support to your talking: put there the one thing you want it to say (your jingle)
Check if conference allows horizontal posters or both to avoid cutting it last minute
Avoid green (makes some people vomit?), consider color blind people

Who I am? A university prof, teaching (w grad school) for 36 years, and a pioneer in problem-based learning in engineering education. (1)
When I started teaching, I assumed that I was supposed to fill the hour between the bells with material, which students, of course, were supposed to understand, and then work problems.

I quickly found out they didn't understand. (2)
It was like they weren't even listening to me. Before lecture, I would furiously scribble notes out of the text, and then during that hour, furiously scribble same notes on the board.

I DID learn a lot about the material I was supposed to teach. Students, not so much... (3)

Some things I have learned from student self-evaluation assignments in my first year writing class, a strange and wonderful thread of personal growth and useful feedback. #AcademicChatter 1/12
1. Five paragraph essays, banishment of personal pronoun, fixed topics, check-box rubrics, and literary analysis of books they don't like is what they do in high school and they learn to produce teacher-pleasing writing that they hate and find irrelevant. 2/12
2. They understand writing, then, as a chore with no point other than securing a grade so that they don't have to take another English/Writing class ever again. 3/12

When I started grad school, I was certain I wanted to join a virology lab, so 3/4 of my rotations were in molecular virology labs. I was having fun, but was overwhelmed with classes and imposter syndrome. 2/n
Halfway through my last rotation, I found myself staring in disbelief at a positive pregnancy test. (Sidebar: Birth control is only 99% effective when taken correctly, y’all) This was 8 months into a PhD program and I was terrified. 3/n
