You know how Bernie's friend Chavez won the election in Venezuela? Basically by saying: "Venezuela is the richest country in Latin America. We should have socialist democracy."

It took merely 20 years for Venezuela to go from the richest to the poorest.
Historic Year

If Bernie is elected, 2020 may be the high water mark for American prosperity, and thereby for the world peace and security as well. In that case, we may also be witnessing the high water mark for human civilization right now.

You see, I had had deep cognitive dissonance over a concept for a very long time.
@ScottAdamsSays 3. In my corporate days, I loved achieving goals and was often frustrated by teams whose role was 'process monitoring' so to speak. Frankly, people who couldn't hack it in doing things were often transferred to those teams, with metaphorical clip-boards to annoy the doers.

1. Capitalism vs Socialism

Now that you put it that way,
-- Capitalism sounds so greedy and crass
-- Socialism sounds so good and noble

In practice, Capitalism leads to the greatest good for the largest number of people, Socialism leads to tyranny and untold misery for most.
2. On first blush it appears counter-intuitive. Upon reflection, it is perfectly foreseeable as to why. We are hostage to emotive words. Profit motive is perhaps the most maligned and misunderstood phrase in the English language, whereas fairness is perhaps the most exalted.
3. But it is the profit motive, not fairness, that makes people get out of bed early, kiss goodbye to their loved ones, and go out there and bust their behinds to produce something that others will find valuable enough to pay more for than it costs the business owners to produce.

In the 1950s, Venezuela was the richest country in Latin America, and the fourth richest country in the world.
Just because socialism leaves societies destitute does not mean it only happens to destitute societies. It can happen anywhere!
In 1974 Venezuela stopped defining its bolivar in gold terms. In 1975 it nationalized the oil industry. In the 80s gov't went bust, bolivar collapsed, people impoverished, and socialist nutjobs became increasingly popular.
Today, they're in late stage socialism, i.e starvation.
