Ten years ago, around exactly this time, I realized how deep #Wetsuweten land defenders roll.

This time, 10 years ago, was Feb 2010 Anti-Olympics Convergence, organized under banner of "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land."
For years in leadup, organizers in city connected w/ land defenders esp in Stat'imc and Secwepemc territories fighting Olympics-related infrastructure on their land. Residents and organizers in Vancouver were fighting gentrification, homelessness, privatization, and surveillance
There was potent movement, that spread across country, including dousing Olympic torch and Blocking the spirit train and days of mass disruption. While some were busy praising the 'green' Olympics and others were criticizing the radical tactics of anti-Olympics organizers,

Tactic #1 - “rule of law”.

They’re ignoring that Canada is in violation of their own law, and that Canada’s law isn’t even on a strong foundation, since it’s based on the colonial concepts of the Doctrine of discovery and Terra Nullius.

Tactic #2 - “democratically elected chiefs"

They’re ignoring that the colonial Indian Act tries to destroy Indigenous Nations, and elected chiefs only have jurisdiction for reserves. We’ve even turned “democracy” into a colonial weapon.

ok, I'm going to say it. Western culture, philosophy & science is basically crap, because at no point did it occur to anyone to emphasize "not fucking up our living environment" as a possible priority of thinking and life. 1/
I'm sure this has occurred to others before, but it's really been brought home to me in past couple of days of watching the #Wetsuweten & #Unistoten defend their land and water. They see their role as protecting each other and the environment they depend on. Absolute clarity. 2/
Why was this perspective totally absent from my (loooooong & diverse) education? We had individual fulfillment, advancement of scientific knowledge, various kinds of social liberation and progress, even some art: nothing at all about our role vis-a-vis our world. So. Much. Fail.

Today was a difficult day to witness. RCMP enforced an injunction to force them to give access to the Coastal GasLink pipeline that would deliver natural gas to the $40 bill, under construction expansion terminal in Kitimat. #wetsuweten #aboriginaltitle #pipeline
The problem is, the office of the Wet’suwet’en (hereditary chiefs) have jurisdiction to the land in question, and don’t want the project. They’ve made it explicit they want to protect the last unspoiled corners of their territory.
The Wet’suwet’en have never given up rights or title to their land and have never entered treaty with the government. Despite that, police forced Wet’suwet’en people and their supporters to leave their land and at least 11 people were arrested.
