Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Bob Mendez all participated in destabilizing actions in Latin America by facilitating weapons and monetary transfers to right-wing groups; most recently their criminal participation in the Bolivia coup d'etat. Not irrelevant.
At home, most U.S. senators are a joke but abroad they use their seats to usurp democracies or support insurrections worldwide, their reasoning ranges from ideological preferences to doing the bidding of resource corporations as was the case in Bolivia, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
When people talk about U.S. imperialism pointing at its military is usually a layman's example that is visually shocking & familiar. However, U.S. meddling and manifest destiny is carried mostly by a decentralized group of Senators serving different interests, some good some bad.
Like all things U.S. imperialism or covert ops are not binary; where some Senators like Rubio, Cruz, & Mendez support right-wing groups others use their position to target fascist regimes or provide humanitarian aid. The main problem is the lack of oversight or accountability.
