Deputy leadership candidates on the BBC license fee....

Angela Rayner: "I'm no big fan of the BBC. I don't think they've been particularly friends of the Labour Party or our Labour leadership. But we've got to make sure that it remains a public broadcaster.
"We've got to make sure it's democratic and free from political interference. Because worldwide it's well respected for that."
Richard Burgon: "I, too, have been disappointed quite often with the way that the BBC has reported – or misreported – the political news. But it's right that the BBC gives all politicians and all political parties a tough time." Goes on to back RLB's 'People's BBC' idea.
Dawn Butler: "I mean the BBC's done themselves no favours, right. During the general election, they were like the Tory PR machine. I'm just like, what the hell's happening here? And the Tories don't even like you."
Butler (cont'd): "Now they want to get rid of the BBC. So in a way I thought, ok, that will teach you. But then we do need to ensure that it stays in public ownership. We need to ensure that there is some independence."
Murray: "There's a simple rule of thumb I have in politics. If the Tories are trying to shut something down, then we should campaign to keep it open. Because they're obviously after the BBC for a reason." Describes BBC as an "arm of social justice" and says "I love the BBC".
