THE NIGERIA HATCHERY INDUSTRY:Exploiting Nigeria Farmers since 1960
Let me quickly share my personal opinion about the reasons why the price of Day Old Chicks remains unstable and d opportunities abound in the poultry hatchery industry in Nigeria

The Nigeria Poultry industry keeps growing rapidly at the speed of light as a result of the partial/total ban of poultry product importation. Recent studies shows that we consumed about 230,000MT of broilers between August and December of 2019 alone, this trend continues to 2020.
A subsector of the Nigerian poultry industry that has a high growth opportunity is the hatchery industry. This is evident in the ownership of most hatcheries in Nigeria.
Most of these hatcheries are built, owned and operated by foreigners.
From Olam to Zartech, Cascada, CHI, Amo
Infact, majority of these renowned hatcheries are owned by Lebanese and Indians. These guys keep making fortune from the sales of DOC's while we Nigerians are sleeping on it. They dictate the price as it suits them and nobody cares because of the limited options we have.
Unfortunately, most of us sees hatchery industry as a rocket science, resigning the faith of the poultry farmers in the hand of these crooks who hiked the price of DOC almost every week.
These people are heartless and have no regards for poultry rearers.
What's obtainable today is a situation where farmers have to book for day-old chicks at the existing hatcheries and wait for weeks or months before they can collect birds. Most of the time, it is even by allocation or they sell to the highest bidders. No price regulations.
The only solution to this madness is for more people to come into the industry and invest more.We need more hatcheries and incubators in Nigeria. We need them to be scattered across Nigeria. Most of the few ones we have are sited in Ibadan/Oyo state. I doubt anyone exist in Lagos
Some of the limitations facing the growth of hatchery business includes
-High cost of establishing a hatchery
-Scarcity of spare parts
-Disease prevalence
-Scarcity of trained hatchery personnel
-Unreliable power supply
Weather
-Scarcity of fertile or hatchable poultry eggs
Currently, the number of poultry hatcheries and incubators in the country cannot meet the demand of the poultry farmers. This is the main reason for their madness. Ask them, they will say law of "Demand and Supply" not minding the farmers....
Therefore, establishment of new modern hatcheries is the only solution and total relief to poultry farmers.
So,what do u need to start an hatchery biz
What is an hatchery?
An hatchery is a place designated for hatching fertile eggs into day old chicks on a commercial scale.
Setting up a hatchery simply means you need to install incubators and Hatchers where fertilized eggs are kept for a period of 21 days, and hatched to day-old chicks.
The day-old chicks are then sold to poultry farmers.
The land to be used for hatchery should have good access to water and electricity. You must also do a water level survey because lots of water will be utilized for sanitation and equipment cleaning.Marshy or water-logged areas is not good for siting an hatchery.
The hatchery also requires a building which will accommodate the various sections in an hatchery such as egg receiving, egg handling, egg fumigation, egg candling, egg setting (incubation) and hatching, chick handling rooms. Each rooms should be well ventilated.
You will also need equipment like incubators (setter only or setter+hatcher combined), trolleys, egg crates, egg baskets, chick baskets, pressure washer, working benches and tables, candling equipment, generators, cooling machines, truck (for delivery), vacuum cleaners.
These equipments and machines can be imported or sourced locally.
Another critical component of hatchery set up the raw materials(fertilized eggs)
I will suggest and advise that investor should have a parent stock that will produce the eggs to be hatched.
It's important you have your Breeder farm along side the hatchery to serve as source of hatchable eggs for the hatchery business.
The advantage of this is that it helps to reduce the cost of production. However, the cost of setting up and running a breeder farm is also high.
If you can't invest in both breeder farm and hatchery at the same time, you can source your hatchable eggs from third parties and other farms or commercialize the hatchery pending the time you can invest in breeder farm.
Just you should know that I can help u with a business plan on this hatchery biz startup.
Don't also forget that I have 15 weeks quality Point of Lay for sales.
