👇🏾Here's the link to the public letter several of us are sending to @netflix & the producers & directors of #WhoKilledMalcolmX. You're welcome to sign in agreement with me, @JeanneTheoharis, @drashleyfarmer, Robin DG Kelley, @TheBarbaraSmith, @MHarrisPerry, @DrIbram & many others
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram We are disappointed at the complete disregard of women activists & women scholars in the series. The producers went to great lengths to include the perspectives of many men, including those w/o expertise on Malcolm X and/or Black Power. Yet not a single woman scholar was featured
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram The exclusion of women scholars is not only deeply problematic but presents a very skewed (& inaccurate) portrayal of history. This is especially disturbing considering the fact that women scholars have been at the forefront of producing scholarship on Civil Rights & Black Power.
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram The only women included in the series were his daughter and one female NOI member—despite the fact that in his later years Malcolm surrounded himself and took counsel from numerous women, inc. Audley "Queen Mother" Moore, Gloria Richardson & Vicki Garvin.
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram The exclusion of these women drastically limited the story the series told and thus distorted the history. Consider, for example, that as @StrugIsEternal discusses in his recent book, #MalcolmX turned to Gloria Richardson for help when his home was bombed.
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram @StrugIsEternal Richardson and her husband secured housing for Malcolm and his family. Consider this: Richardson is still alive and yet, incredibly, was not interviewed for this series.
@netflix @JeanneTheoharis @drashleyfarmer @TheBarbaraSmith @MHarrisPerry @DrIbram @StrugIsEternal We demand better from @netflix. We are asking for a commitment – especially as we approach women’s history month—to ensure gender parity in the experts used in historical documentaries. Enough is enough.
