Permanent Commission fo women officers in the Military:

Supreme Court Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Ajay Rastogi hearing the matter pertaining to permanent Commission for women in the Navy.
Senior Counsel CU Singh arguing for the women Petitioners in the matter.

Singh tells the Court Section 9(2) of the Navy Act which disallows women from being appointed in the Navy unless specified by a notification.
Singh takes the Court through a notification which had said that women would be eligible for appointment in certain specific branches such as education, engineering, logistical etc. The notification does not say anything about short service or permanent commission.
Singh says that the four branches of executive, engineering, education, and electrical together have a total of 19 sub branches
1991 policy lays doen the terms and conditions for appointment and one thing stipulated in it says policy on permanent commission shall be promulgated in 1999, Singh tells the SC
Another counsel intervenes to apprise the Court that there appears to be a fallacy that even mem are not being given permanent commission and adds that various men who were inducted in short service commission have been given permanent commission.
CU Singh takes the Court through the achievements of various women naval officers, makes a point about "tremendous service for the nation by these women Officers"
The women Petitioners had served the force for equal time and with equal training as their make counterparts but were denied PC as opposed to their male counterparts, if this is not discrimination then what is, CU Singh to Supreme Court
Hearing concludes for the day.
