@jnyrose @actualham @Medium Great thread + thanks Jennie! I note @opencontent mentions WP+Twitter. We (@jnyrose, @manclibrarian and I, magicians the 3 of us 🧙🧙‍♂️🧙‍♀️) also feel a 'social media' element is important (for 'tutors'/all participants). In our case Medium feels somewhere between WP and Twitter ...
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian However this year in moving Digital Society from blended to online-only, we wanted to add something which:

* feels like a twitter hashtag/thread; yet
* can be embedded as an activity; and
* is anonymous, public, no login, type a comment and 1 click to post.

... 2/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian So we developed (& continue to) an open source 'comment stream' tool (glitch.com/~tourmaline-co…) which we reckon will embed pretty much anywhere (Wordpress, Medium, Blackboard...)

We add a prompt for learners to consider, they post a response and see others' responses ... 3/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian Here's what it looks like (and an example of how we can watch the 'whole class' discussion live on a big screen TV!)

... 4/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian We had it ready a while before we went live, so our colleague @atweetingsavage got involved, remixed the code a bit without relying on us (a reminder of the value of open source), and road-tested it with 100s of students last semester (thanks Nick!)

... 5/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage My favourite bit (as is often the case) is our Library Student Team's involvement, though (may take a couple more tweets to get there)

Each week, participants are encouraged to work through a topic post, adding to the conversation through the comment streams above.

... 6/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage Each week, our Student Team review the comments and discussions so far, pick out themes and quotes, record and publish a podcast summary of the topic. There is almost zero non-student involvement, and all the better for it because they are absolute PROS 🎙️

... 7/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage So: students contribute to discussions around the topic, read each other's comments, then paid students summarise the discussions which may add another way to review the topic/hear new perspectives. I like to think this is a bit like @holden's Choral Explanations.

... 8/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden We are also encouraging students to add their voices to the choir through adding 'topic summary' posts (or podcasts of their own, if they wish) to the course publication to further enrich the course materials.

This is something we piloted in PGCert OKHE last year too.

... 9/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden The aim is to maintain the feel of a flipped approach where learners feel together & part of a discussion - while studying online, likely solo. The podcast, we hope, gives the feel of a classroom discussion, and is - as we always aim in f2f - student-led.

... 10/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden Here are some examples (all open!) of what I've been rattling on about :)

Topic: Critical Analysis
Materials: medium.com/digital-societ…

Near the top is an intro from topic lead Kit, and the Student Team's review podcast (+transcripts).

... 11/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden Read through the post and see the '💬 Contribute' activities - these are the main discussion points for the review podcast. Feel free to add to them; the course is indeed open (please be nice 🙂), the aim is that the discussions are not over after the topic 'week'

... 12/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden You'll see also in the above that students can leave longer responses by replying to the post. Their replies have their name on, they can include links/formatting, and they can stand alone as posts. Both options are great, the comment streams get a lot more responses.

... 13/n
@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden Here's this week's topic - explore new technology with @uomdigilab. Students started looking at it 1 week ago, Student Team worked on the podcast over the last few days, and published it fresh today (embedded near top of post):

@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden @uomdigilab GEEKY STATS and then I must go home.

We're in week 5, ~47 students enrolled.

* 204 comments made since 26 Jan.
* Word counts range from 8-311. Mean=69, median=38, sum=14111 words, wowz!
* May be a 'long tail' to engagement (not confined to the 'week')

Happy to collab/share/chat to anyone interested in how we approach this (+OKHE) module

@jnyrose @actualham @Medium @opencontent @manclibrarian @atweetingsavage @holden @uomdigilab @davehirsty @UoMLibrary @UCIL_UoM @DrCraigMorley @OfficialUoM @KatyWoolfenden Also, thanks to @davehirsty, materials were ready in advance, but how did we plan podcasts when the discussions were yet to happen?

We planned a rough format, then thanks to @TheLearningTwit and @annatheis88 recorded the first 2 which served as examples for student team. 🎙️
