Yep. Moderates always win. Just ask presidents John Kerry, Al Gore, and Hillary Clinton.
Just no bet more sure than the moderate, the unbeatable choice that never ever fails.
I really hope we can run somebody in 2020 who we can all still insist won even though they didn’t actually become president.
My point is this: the narrative that it takes a moderate candidate and only a moderate candidate to win a presidential election is unsupported by my observation of most presidential elections in my lifetime.
I’m not saying a progressive candidate isn’t a gamble.

Nothing is written. The future is unknown.

But stop pretending a moderate candidate isn’t a gamble too—and, based on the available data, probably a *bigger* gamble.

It’s tiresome.
If a moderate candidate is what it takes to win the swing states, explain why Donald Trump won Pennsylvania and Michigan and Wisconsin and Florida and Ohio and North Carolina.

does he seem moderate to you
If a moderate candidate is what it takes to win swing states, then explain why Barack Obama, running as a very progressive candidate (however he governed), won Indiana and Virginia and Ohio and Florida and Wisconsin and Michigan and Iowa and North Carolina and part of Nebraska.
As I recall, democratic party leadership was very concerned about Barack Obama, because they saw him as unelectable and unable to reach those swing state voters in middle America.

They were wrong, as it happens.
“Unelectable” progressive change candidate Barack Obama? Running on universal healthcare and big structural change Barack Obama? “Too left to win swing states” Barack Obama? Tell him I miss him.
It’s just so strange to me how safe candidates keep losing and candidates who can’t win keep winning.

Almost seems like all this punditry is ... wrong?
Anyway. I don’t pretend a progressive candidate is a lock. But omg there is no reason in the world to think one is a guaranteed loser—and FAR LESS reason to think a moderate is a lock to win.
This idea that it takes a moderate to win swing states has its basis in 1992, 96, and ... ??? Yet it’s an article of faith. It’s just weird.

Vote for a moderate if you want one. But if your reason is simply you want to win, I don’t get you. We’ve experienced the same elections.
