An Obama-era rule requires all nursing homes & long-term care facilities to employ infection prevention specialists at least part time.

Last year, the Trump admin advanced a proposal to weaken that requirement, sparking an outcry from leading public health experts.

After @NBCNews's first story, HUD has promised to require detectors for the first time. But it still hasn't released a proposal, and Congress hasn't acted either. Meanwhile, more people are dying.
Our count is now 13 deaths since the beginning of 2003 -- four of them since the beginning of 2019 alone. The actual death toll is likely to be higher, as these were based on media accounts, confirmed by local authorities. Not every death makes the news.

This is worth paying attention to: Steve Bannon is now calling his show "WarRoom Pandemic", and today he explicitly forecast his plans to use #coronavirus as a political strategy to help re-elect Trump. He did it with Ebola, too, so he has some experience in this area. #COVIDー19

Having seen Bannon help weaponize the Ebola outbreak for political purposes, I've been waiting for something similar in 2020. Authoritarians tend to benefit from infectious disease outbreaks (and the fear surrounding them).

It requires carefully balancing interventions to control disease spread, & the potential impacts of these interventions, incl. social & eco impacts. This is especially hard in the context of uncertainty.
