Theory:

Viral social media clip of Australians manically bulk buying Quilton as was on special offer on Monday at Woolies:

Occurred at same time as PM presser here. Everyone not stockpiling, then thinks everyone else is, so thinks they have to buy it.
Also see the viral clip on pasta from Italy too. Hey presto pics of empty shelves this eve.

But not a supply issue - it’s demand has spiked suddenly beyond expectations. Australia especially is self sufficient in toilet roll.

Supermarkets now adjusting to Xmas levels of demand.
This is all standard behavioural finance, herd mentality, prospect theory.

I’d say clearer supply issues on hand gel, also made broader mass of people sensitive to fact early movers appeared to “win”.

Way to deal with this is to show plentiful supply:
This is an interesting note from an Aussie retail chief instigating a 4 pack 120 roll limit - factories ramping up supply. Average use for a family of 4 is 20 rolls a fortnight - so that’s 12 weeks supply.

Of course, there will soon be a surplus of toilet roll, because no one actually needs to use more of it, just decided they would rather fill their bathrooms than risk not being able to get hold of it....

Also some supportive evidence for Australia theory:
And timing here works out with my broad theory - but I acknowledge this is not proof:
I know why people might say this... but I think theres a social media dynamic of its own. Pictures from elsewhere, general fears, and then pics of empty shelves. Many media (not all ) held back rather than amplified.
