Starting today households throughout the United States will receive their invitation in the mail to complete #Census2020 . Check your mailbox! If you did not get the letter today, it is coming either tomorrow or on March 19th or 20th.
The Census affects how over $600 billion in funding is distributed.
New York receives more than $53 billion in federal funding each year for hospitals, schools, transportation, emergency services, and more.
New York loses $2,600 in federal funding for every person not counted.
The Census has historically undercounted people of color and overcounted the White population. In 2010, the Census undercounted the Black population by 2.1% and Black children under 4 by 6%
In 2010, the Census undercounted the Hispanic population by 1.5% and Hispanic children under 4 by 8%.
In 2010, the Census undercounted renters by 1.1%. Every undercount leads to reduction in funding and democratic representation.
Everyone whose usual place of residence is in the United States should fill out the Census. Our right to be counted is in the Constitution, Article I, Section 2.
The Census does not ask about immigration, documentation, or legal status. If you live in the US, you count!
Everyone who lives with you in your household counts, including friends and relatives staying the temporarily; family who are non-citizens, have DACA or are undocumented.
The Census asks questions about race and Hispanic origin to fulfill the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was designed to prohibit racial discrimination in voting.
On the Census form, you will be asked to indicate whether you are of Hispanic Origin and identify your race. You can pick more than one race or write in your answer.
The Census keeps your personal data safe! It is illegal for the Census to share your personal data with landlords, employers, schools, police, courts, judges, immigration authorities, the federal government, or anyone!
It is a felony for the Census to share your personal information! It is protected under Title 13 of the US Code.
Each household fills out one Census form. The Census form can be submitted online, by telephone, or on paper. You can respond in 13 languages
Most addresses in the NYC metropolitan area will receive an invitation to complete the census online. It will give you a unique code to fill out the Census.
If you live in the Bronx, some parts of Harlem and the Lower East Side, some parts of Brooklyn and Queens, you will also receive a paper form.
If you do not respond to the Census online by mid-April and only received an online invitation in the first mailing, the Census will mail you a paper form and will attempt to contact you by mail several times.
If you do not respond either online or by mail before May 13, the Census will send an employee recruited from your own community to assist you in filling out your form.
Many #CUNY students live, work, and go to school in areas that are Hard to Count. Make sure that your household, your neighbors, your coworkers, and your friends COUNT! #Census2020
