To the racist older white man who spat at me & called me a “g**k” as I was delivering prescriptions to a family: No thank you

To the Lola who asked after how I was: I let you know, but you have no idea how much I needed that

Processing: Angry, saddened, & honoring my feelings.
For context: I’m a School Nurse and amidst this current quarantine situation our school’s staff are delivering groceries, meds, etc. to our families/students - who all have a high level of need - and as I was unlocking my bicycle post-drop off all that happened.
It’s important to honor the very real reactions of myself and other Asians & Asian Americans to this racism, but also want to acknowledge that this is the kinda shit Black & Brown folx have been experiencing for ages. Even more so to those of queer &/or trans identities.

The @USCensusBureau chose to publicize the upcoming #2020Census to the Asian community by mostly choosing media outlets under the influence of the #Chinese regime, including one that is a registered foreign agent. (Thread👇) theepochtimes.com/census-2020-ad…
The Bureau has also chosen not to use two independent #Chinese-language outlets that have been critical of the Chinese regime, even though these outlets have much greater digital reach than those the Bureau has chosen and took part in the advertising of the #2010Census.
China Global Television Network (@CGTNOfficial) was selected as one of the paid media outlets of the #2020Census.

CGTN’s original name was China Central Television (@CCTV), the Chinese #Communist regime’s mouthpiece in television broadcasting. It was re-branded as CGTN in 2016.

States should decide they won't collect any parameters other than what is defined in Citizenship act for NPR updation.

Let's understand Citizenship Registry for CAB will be derived from #Census2020 possibly via an algorithmic operation. So refuse anything more than these.
In 2011 census, many of us refused Biometrics based on this and saved ourselves from enrolling for illegal Aadhaar , while giving data to census.

THREAD: Lots of negative media speculation about #DACA after today's oral arguments at #SCOTUS but here are key things to keep in mind:
1/ There is NO #DACA decision today. We likely won't have a decision until spring, or as late as June. Until #SCOTUS decides, the program remains in effect.
2/ Oral argument at #SCOTUS is NOT necessarily a preview of individual justices' views or the final decision. Justices often play "devil's advocate." We should not be assuming that they will kill #DACA just because they made skeptical comments or asked tough questions.

1/16 It has begun. The GOP is spinning that the sole transcript Trump says he will release is more important than the #WhistleblowerComplaint as a tactic to insist everything should ride on this one supposed piece of evidence.

2/16 All reports indicate this was a months-long conspiracy Trump and Giuliani were engaged in, subverting & bypassing officials who tried to stop them.

Forget the obvious like his tax returns, school grades, and secret meetings with Putin.

Actually, a reminder of those secret meetings:

1) My background is math, and I used to build predictive statistical models. I want to throw up a ⚠️red flag⚠️about what the administration just proposed for a work-around of the #citizenshipquestion for #Census2020

First, this is what D.trUMP said today at the White House...
2) In a nutshell, they want to gather vast amounts of federal data so that they can determine (or in some cases, guess) whether someone is a US citizen or not

This federal data, once merged w/ the census data, would be a very powerful tool that could be weaponized, like in 2016
3) They're asking for data from "every department and agency in the federal government"

This includes:
INS
SSA
IRS
HHS
VA
DOJ
HUD
Dept of Education

The big questions are;
What data is "legally accessible"?
Will the federal agencies cooperate?

A thread with some thoughts on DOJ's letter in the #Census2020 case, which can be found (alongside some great analysis from @rickhasen) here.

electionlawblog.org/?p=106089
First, it's unsurprising for DOJ to assert that any "new" decision to add the Q must be assessed w/o reference to the history of the policy

As I noted at @ShallTakeCare, it's a standard, oft-repeated move in the Trump DOJ's 'animus-laundering' playbook

takecareblog.com/blog/thoughts-…
Indeed, amid debate over the #TransBan and #TravelBan, I wrote an op-ed for @PostOpinions in *March 2018* identifying this animus-laundering strategy and warning that we could expect to see a lot more of it

I hope everyone is paying more attention to the health of our democracy in this administration. Today's 2 decisions from the #SupremeCourt have one thing in common: the fight to erase minority communities' political power will continue.
In Dept of Commerce v NY, #SCOTUS kept the #citizenship question on #Census2020 barred, for now.

In Rucho v. Common Cause, SCOTUS threw up its hands and said it couldn't decide partisan gerrymandering cases - allowing the devious process to continue.
The Sec of Commerce (who heads @uscensusbureau) thought it was worth the risk to not count immigrants fearful of responding to a #censuscitizenship question.

The Court, of course, didn't think much of any of his stated justifications, finding them "contrived" and pretextual.

Barbara Underwood FTW!

It was such a privilege to get to play a small role in this case when I was at the NYAG’s office - and I’m in awe of the brilliant legal team that beat back this incredibly wrongheaded policy. #Census2020
Holy crap, the federal government is printing the #Census without the citizenship question. This is no longer a tentative win, it’s a full win. !!!
15 months ago, the NY AG’s office + partners filed suit against the Trump administration over its plan to demand citizenship status on the #Census2020. This @GettyImages pic was taken just before our presser announcing the suit.

And now it's over. Democracy won. How about that.

#BREAKING:
Supreme Court agrees with lower court decision in part about census citizenship question...The government explanation to put the question on the form was “INVALID”
The citizenship question can not stand as it was out now, giving the census bureau another chance to “rephrase” the Citizenship question, back to the 4th circuit court #CENSUS2020.

My non legal professor opinion, this will not make it to the 2020 census.
Basically: the citizenship question is blocked for now.

Head’s up. @SwingLeft is paying attention to #Census2020 and #Gerrymandering in terms of protecting our democracy. I like their strategy for the win. Here is their recent email, which they asked us to share liberally on social media. #Election2020 1/
The Trump administration has tried to sneak a question of citizenship status into the #2020census. Recently leaked documents from a GOP redistricting strategist revealed it was created specifically to exclude minority groups like Latinx from census participation—resulting in 2/
... inaccurate population counts that affect apportionment (how House seats are distributed) and federal funding for critical social services. If this happens, Republicans will have another baked-in electoral advantage—and communities of color will be underrepresented ...

It goes beyond ICE. #KKKobach has been up front about why he wants the citizenship question on #Census202. In fact, they used it in court... They said, we need this question to enforce the Voting Rights Act and the National Voter Registration Act.
