New paper @NatureMedicine with a timeline of symptoms and immune responses of a 47-year-old from Wuhan in an Australian hospital. Cough and fever were initial symptoms (see below). Ct value is #coronavirus load, below nasal detection by day 7, with symptoms over by day 13...
A flu-susceptibility variant (C/C) was found in the Interferon Induced Transmembrane Protein 3 gene (IFITM3). It will be important to test more DNA to know if IFITM3 genetic variations predict #COVIDsymptoms.

Sadly, it's not in our 23andMe results, but for researchers, the DNA primers to amplify the gene are in the Nature Medicine paper so it should be relatively easy to get this data from patient samples. @mason_lab #coronavirus

I'm often asked if NAD decline makes #COVID19 worse in the elderly. It's speculation at present. NAD is vital for >450 enzymes including for energy & sirtuins, which are anti-viral (e.g. HIV, Flu, CMV) but no human evidence exists.

Hyper-inflammation & organ damage can occur in #coronavirus patients. A study showed boosting NAD with nicotinamide riboside (NR) protects mice from damage in sepsis (bacterial proteins in blood) but another indicated the opposite..

My lab has tried to boost NAD to treat severe🐁sepsis and didn't see a significant difference. Bottom line: there isn't enough known to say if NAD might be relevant, helpful, or harmful in #COVIDー19 elderly. I'd like to know when my lab restarts, so please save blood samples 🙏

.. As discussed before: this is very good IMO, because using Basic Reproduction Numbers (the R0) has turned out to be unreliable (the actual transmission numbers are due to many other factors: R0 isn't a good indicator) for predicting the future numbers of #nCoV-infections. (3/9)

A doctor from Wuhan Union Hospital said the city followed a “cold treatment” strategy at first. A directive banned doctors from discussing the disease on public platforms or speaking to media without authorization. Medical authorities, including CDC, were told to keep quiet.
69-year-old “super patient” Zhao Junshi was being treated for pituitary tumor in the neurosurgery department at Wuhan Union Hospital. He started to have fever on Jan 11 after surgery. Doctors said it was hard to confirm the cause given his complicated medical condition.
