“She tried to argue that the disease could be contagious. They said her action caused panic and ‘damaged the stability’ of Wuhan.”

China didn’t handle this outbreak well.

Authorities covered it up and thousands have died as a result.

On Dec 10, Wei Guixian, a seafood merchant at Hua’nan market, started to feel sick. Eight days later they were in hospital.

The symptoms, fever, coughing, fatigue and aching limbs, were appearing among market workers and people unconnected with the market.
By Dec 21, there were about three dozen people showing similar symptoms.

On Dec. 29, a doctor notified China CDC’s district office, which had already heard similar reports from elsewhere in Wuhan.
On Dec. 30, a lab test revealed “SARS coronavirus”.

A photo of this test was received by Li Wenliang.

Dr Li posted it on a doctor WeChat group, “coronavirus confirmed, and type being determined... Don’t leak it. Tell your family and relatives to take care.”
Dr Li’s warnings started spreading on WeChat until state censors swooped.

He was reprimand by authorities and forced to write a self-criticism letter saying that leak “had a negative impact” efforts to investigate the outbreak.
On Dec 25, another doctor in Wuhan, Lü Xiaohong, noted cases of viral pneumonia.

On Jan 2, after raising warnings, the hospital’s discipline dept told her to stop “spreading rumors.” Staff were banned from discussing the disease. Three doctors died at that hospital.
On Dec 30, the Wuhan office of the China CDC did a retrospective search for similar pneumonia cases from the market and reported them to the national CDC headquarters, who sent investigators.
On Dec 31, the WHO was informed about a small number of cases of pneumonia linked to the market — authorities had so far failed to connect the many cases not linked to the market.
“The investigation so far has not found any obvious human-to-human transmission or infection of medical staff... The disease is preventable and controllable,” the Wuhan branch of the National Health Commission claimed despite emerging evidence otherwise.
On Jan 2, the genetic sequence is mapped is first mapped and coronavirus identified but this isn’t announced.

On Jan 5, another mapping is done in Shanghai and there are demands for control measures.
On Jan 6, China’s CDC activated an emergency response but didn’t announce this publicly.

On Jan 7, President Xi takes charge of response but also doesn’t announce this.

It’s not till Jan 9 that a coronavirus outbreak is announced.
On Jan 15, officials still claim human-to-human transmission risk is low.

They allow a massive lunar new year’s gathering to go ahead on Jan 18, and as many as 5 million people travel out of Wuhan.
It’s not till Jan 20 that human-to-human transmission is announced and Wuhan is locked down on Jan 23.

This is many many weeks after first cases and censored warnings from doctors.
This is some truly heroic reporting by the @WSJ, from both official sources and speaking to contacts on the ground.

It’s no wonder they want to kick all their journalists out of the country.
