Next speaker is Kelly Henderson speaking about Bringing a Public Health Lens to Design Research

#dr2020
Kelly has a background in psychology and public health.

She was drawn to the area because of the participatory nature of the work, it's focus on social health justice and the big problems that exist in the space.

Purpose of the talk listed below
Public health definition and core elements
Kelly will focus on social and environmental determinates of health in this talk.
What are the tools that Kelly uses?
Tool 2
So what does the social ecological model look like on practice?

Here it is used about who got vaccinated for H1N1
So how can these two models be used in Design Research?
Redlining is a method to dent services and loans to neighbourhoods—Black, migrant and low income neighbourhoods were denied access.

Learning the history of structural racism and its impact on the impact of respitory illness and how people manage it.
Transportation considerations can really impact the delivery of a health service.

In research consider how you make access to your sessions and how people will access a service.
Participatory research methods
Using participatory methods lets you zoom in to the experience of the participants. It also has a clear outcome for the participants where they can showcase their experience.
The last tool Kelly will share is Ethical decision making
Using ethical frameworks and learnings from previous projects can keep ethics front and mind throughout the whole research process.

The public health space is also excellent at showing designers what NOT to do.

Including the Belmont report
The examples down the bottom.

Recruitment
A medical device that only worked on white skin. Why weren't they recruiting a representative sample?

Fieldwork
Creating referral network for people who experienced trauma uncovered in research
Kelly's key takeaways
Thank you so much @Hendo!!!!!!
Q: is there anything different you would do analysing the data?
A: generally a phase of that research involves doing synthesis WITH the people who have created the data. Shifting the power to the person with lived experience. The things they're able to convey are so powerful!
