Dr. Fauci goes on TV and tells lies to protect Trump. That's part of his role in this crisis.

(Or maybe he really just doesn't know what's going on. But based on his record, I'm willing to give him the benefit and assume he does.)
It's true that if he refused to go on TV and tell some lies for Trump, he wouldn't have his job for long. And Dr. Fauci does use his position to offer a more honest assessment then just about anyone else on Trump's pandemic team.

So that's the bargain he's struck.
Contrary to Dr. Fauci's claims, Italy stopped all incoming flights from China on Jan 31st, with no exceptions.

The U.S. didn't ban incoming flights from China. Instead, starting Feb. 2 it directed all incoming flights from China to arrive at eight designated airports.
The U.S. also banned foreign nationals who had been in China within the previous 14 days from entering the country (with some exceptions, i.e., permanent residents and relatives of U.S. citizens).

But flights from China still came in. Americans who'd been in China came in.
Sec. Azar, at the press briefing, says "our health experts say that these measures have been truly effective" at slowing the virus. And he claims that Italy's situation shows what would have happened if Trump had not taken the action he did.

Italy did more than what Trump did.
Dr. Fauci is lending his credibility and expertise to sell these lies on Trump's behalf.

I'm not at all suggesting he approves of this situation, or that he's doing it out of any sort of political support for Trump. And who knows, maybe we're all better off for him doing so.
Dr. Fauci is now defending Trump's delusional obsession with hydroxychloroquine by saying that his own position on the drug "really isn't different" from the President's.
Dr. Fauci will help Trump give terrible medical advice that will kill people, if that's what it takes to keep his job.
Even when Dr. Fauci tries to delicately hint around about the truth, he's immediately undercut.

After Fauci spoke, Trump pointed at Pence and directed him to clean up the response, and explain why testing is going just perfect now in America.
Dr. Fauci again explains away Trump's irresponsible hyping of untested drugs as a miracle cure for covid-19, by saying Trump "is talking about hope, and that's not unreasonable."

Fauci will protect Trump's irresponsible and dangerous acts every step of the way. That's his job.
Dr. Fauci is there to be the perceived voice of credibility and wisdom. If Dr. Fauci says Trump's nonsensical quacking is reasonable, then obviously it must be.
