This wasn’t even *mentioned* in PM’s briefing today. Deputy CMO said on Fri, situation was ‘resolved’. This is simply not true. We must try & protect those on frontline & that involves forcing answers from govt.
Anyway thank you to my confreres in the lobby for helpfully illuminating how the press conference works. No pre-vetted qs. If they seem repetitive it’s because the broadcasters want their own guy/gal asking it. It’s not North Korea, I’m happy to report. Just a crap format
I watched along live at home with no insider knowledge of the set-up & maybe my focus is skewed because I’m hearing the frontline horror stories but I couldn’t believe issue of PPE wasn’t raised. And this isn’t a dig at any of the journalists; it’s at the inadequacy of the format

Boris Johnson says he’s still leading country. He made big show of still leading cabinet meetings by Zoom. If he’s not well enough, fair enough. Put Rabb in charge & let him answer qs. But govt must be accountable & currently it’s not

To be clear, that wasn’t aimed at all Tory MPs. Most of them are very sensible & are currently in their constituencies trying to do their best.

We actually needed answers 2 & 1/2 weeks ago when this issue first became apparent & before parliament dissolved itself. The press has been slow & inadequate. But MPs have been far, far worse. Where are they?? Why is parliament not sitting? Its a total dereliction of duty
Because NEWSFLASH: the govt doesn’t care about tweets. Press has been slow & supine but is now unable to properly challenge because of format of press conferences. PM once again missing in action. But this is literally the job of parliament. Where on earth is it?
MPs have signed letter asking for a digital parliament but the need to do more. Why didn’t they insist on this before recess? When they actually still had some power? We are about to enter eye of storm & they have left us with no way of holding executive to account

These are the numbers from Wales. They are routinely left off national reporting but numbers from Gwent (Aneurin Bevan health board) are shocking & far in excess of London & Cardiff & Vale only slightly behind
Meanwhile, the whole of Wales has a grand total of 176 critical care beds

Govt medical spokeswoman now saying lockdown will last at least 6 mths & may go on much longer.
The model Dr Harris proposed was that measures might be refined & relaxed marginally over time but without any period of normality ahead of 6 mths. But surely that can't be right! We have to be allowed out from time to time! What she described is even worse than the Sawtooth!!
Journalists asks Deputy CMO to confirm she means 6 mths lockdown. Unfortunately she waffles, saying she doesn't mean lockdown & then describes a situation of lockdown for 6 mths. Hopeless messaging.

So thank God it looks like the coronovirus is not as deadly as first feared. Some may wonder then why organizations & the govt are reacting to it differently than the ordinary flu. A few observations. /1
A. The L strain (the more aggressive strain) is quite fatal for the elderly & those with compromised immune or respiratory systems or other serious underlying medical issues. We should try to protect those populations from a mass epidemic. /2
B. Because it is new, there is no vaccine for it & our population has no natural immunity to it either, so transmission to vulnerable populations even from asymptomatic carriers will likely be quite high - higher than for the flu where we have vaccines & partial immunities. /3

Read the entire thread but before that watch this interview, both parts.

This was his first visit to US as PM. I will give him the margin for inexperience & being nervous. Its natural.
He was clearly very cautious in his replies, not his natural self. Thinking too much while trying to chose the correct words from the limited vocabulary & knowledge he has on history & geopolitics. He was briefed heavily by his staff on expected questions & their best replies.
Though he is sincere, it is a fact that his knowledge of history & regional geopolitics is a disaster. Though he does not read from the paper while speaking, he is known for his verbal blunders & some terribly poor choice of words & narration of facts.

An excellent legal defense that deflects and offloads any responsibility for dissimulation or lying on the part of the visa applicant away from the organization behind the initiative itself. Plausible deniability. Something to learn from.
This is a very curious advisory and somewhat clashes with claimed purpose of "monitoring": how do u monitor violence by Israelis if u withdraw from any confrontational situation? The reason becomes clear later. It gives excuse to selectively record "violence" only from "Israel".
