Are democracies lax in responding to #COVID19? See 👇

Data on Gov't response (as of 3/24) from @BlavatnikSchool (⬆️= more restrictions). Data on regimes (2017) from Polity (⬆️= more democratic)

Take away? A ⏬ trend, but probably b/c democracies better at reporting data🤔

Did the USSR's collapse lead to dysfunction in US politics?

My answer: *probably* not

The Lesson: Don't look to 1918. Look at 1916. It took 2 years of war for the European allies to finally, & reluctantly, jointly address their supply issues

By early 1915, it was clear that the war was resource intensive. The European allies -- 🇫🇷🇬🇧🇮🇹 -- were going to need a host of resources: munitions, raw materials, and food. Lot's of food.

And "food" mostly meant wheat, which was important for soldiers & civilians.
Though they were "allies", each wanted to make sure they fed their *own* soldiers and own civilians.

Each ally was scared of bread lines in THEIR OWN country!

Talk about a cooperation problem!

The key idea of that symposium: there are many features of the international system -- economic, financial, and military -- that anchor the dollar's strength as the world's key currency.

Quick Fix Economic measures for #COVIDー19

1) Suspend Income Tax

To make sure individuals have more dollars in their pockets to weather the storm, Gvt ought to provide at least a 3month tax holiday to all workers on income tax. This will boost consumption and economic activity
2) Suspend Corporate Tax

Our Gvt has no capacity to bail out strategic corporates. However a suspension of corporate tax will ease the burden of declining sales due to low economic activity as a result of the pandemic. Gvt can still collect taxes through VAT on sales.
3) Repayment holidays on loans

To cushion borrowers from default, Banks can extent repayment holidays on Principal amounts.However borrowers should honour the payment of interest until such a time when things return to normal!

Update on #covid in Belgium after gov press conf tonight (a thread):

All residents to stay at home from 12.00 tom (Wed18 Mar) to limit the spread.

Applies until 5 April, but could be extended. Police granted extra powers for ensuring the confinement is respected.

The move follows the shutdown of bars, cafes & restaurants last weekend.

Essential outings will still be allowed—to buy food & medicine, go to a bank, petrol station or post office, attend a medical app, help an elderly relative or go to work if job cannot be done remotely.

Outdoor exercise—walking, jogging or cycling—will still be "allowed, even recommended" but only with one other person, Sophie Wilmès (Belgian PM) said.

Everyone is advised to keep a distance of 1.5m from each other.

Public transport will continue to run.
