It works like this:

🔹Trump controls his base.
🔹His base is a majority of the Republican Party.
🔹A Republican cannot get elected without Trump’s base.
🔹If they cross Trump, he’ll turn his base against them.

They want power more than they want to do what is right.
Don't get me wrong.

Many of them are fully on board with the Trump-FOX-GOp reactionary / destructive / fascist agenda.

Others less so, but they rationalize their decisions and actions.
People like @BillKristol have persuaded me. I'm forgetting which of the Never Trump Republicans insist that many act from fear.

(Trying to get work done this morning, so I won't search to find out, but I've been persuaded by some of Never Trumpers)

1/ This is precisely how fascism takes over.

From ⤵️ fascism isn’t an ideology. It’s a mass uprising led by a mesmerizing leader.

Fascists come to power through legal means (they are elected or appointed) and then they immediately begin battering the democratic institutions.
2/ Fascism is a cult of leadership. The followers believe the leader's instincts are superior to rational logic.

Sociologist Max Weber has the best explanation. He lists 3 sources of authority:
🔹Traditional (monarchy)
🔹Rational rule of law (democracy)
🔹Charismatic leader

He'll learn that what he can get away with in a rally, he can't get away with in a White House press conference.

Remember: A big win in Nov. doesn't require converting ALL MAGAs.

Dems won the midterms by 8 points & Dems won everywhere.

For a landslide we improve a bit on that
*everywhere meaning across regions, including traditional Republican strongholds. Wins were not confined to already blue areas.
This is it, exactly.
There are reasons that 40% has gained so much power. Fixing what's wrong will take time. November will be the start.

Also, consequences don't happen immediately. There's not a big hand that swoops down and immediately . . .

Trump says that he doesn't actually have to follow the law set by Congress.

He can do as he pleases with the money.

Are you okay with this?

This is consistent with the position he took at his impeachment: He is above the law.

You agreed.

Right?
His argument is that Congress has no oversight in how he carries out the law.

The only thing Congress can do is pass a different law.

His view: Congress passes laws. He does as he pleases.
The solution remains what it's always been: Vote them all out.

Welcome to today's #Trump #ImpeachmentTrial thread (potentially one of a few)! I've been playing around with tags a little in other tweets this morning but for now, I'm going to stick with the two I've used here. That may change later on, though. Follow/mute at will!
Today is going to be procedural stuff. The Senate will have to approve the (completely BS) rules proposed by McConnell. Dems will offer amendments, of course, but since a simple majority rules I don't have a lot of hope any of the amendments will pass. #Trump #ImpeachmentTrial
For those of you just tuning in, McConnell is proposing that this trial have:

Zero witnesses
Zero admitted evidence
Ridiculously little time set aside for opening arguments and questions.
As little sunlight as possible.
