This is GAME CHANGER. Abbott to market, starting next week, a fast point-of-care #coronavirus test, delivering positive results in 5min and negative results in 13min. Will deliver 50K tests/day to start. Kudos to Abbott and FDA’s Jeff Shuren and team at CDRH who are in the fight.
It’s very likely that we’ll see additional approvals of POC diagnostics behind this one, extending testing to doctor offices across the U.S.

THREAD: There’s confusion about a proposal in our plan to reopen. Some observers refer to “GPS tracking” of individuals in describing one idea in the report. That's not in our report. Instead we talk about using technology to help oversee case-based containment strategies. 1/6
The idea is to use phone apps tied to cell phones to help enforce isolation in people with known disease. South Korea, Israel already do this – with success. This is a key element of case-based interventions aimed at isolating individuals with disease to reduce spread. 2/6
All public health officials are very familiar with these tools and use them globally. In our report, we specifically talk about using them for home isolation in people with confirmed #COVID19 diagnosis. We limit our proposal to people who are already ordered to stay home. 3/6

THREAD: The cities that face a growing risk of large epidemics are going to be pressed as many federal resources have been forward deployed to New York, and the federal ability to backstop multiple cities is going to be limited. There are things every city should be doing now.
Low census hospitals are still doing elective cases, and consuming supplies. That must end. States must focus resources on urban hospitals and take reasonable steps to reduce activity in community; move available supplies and capacity freed up at community level to urban setting
Germ theory will prevail. The virus will be a national epidemic. While we hope some communities will be spared, we should expect urban centers to all be engulfed. Because the virus hasn't reached every city yet; every urban center should prepare as if it will. Many still aren't.

My bro has been self-quarantined bc he unknowingly came in contact w a #coronavirus patient. When he accidentally missed a call from a local health center for twice a day temp check, they were like “if you EvER leave home we hv to track you down w our police. Answer your phone.”
Okay to be exact - my mom and bro have been both self-quarantined. Bro went to mom’s workplace to help her to her room, and both got in contact w mom’s colleague who came to work WHILE running fever and showing other obvious #coronavirus symptoms. What the actual fuck.
After they found out mom’s colleague tested positive, they received several calls- from mom’s employer, local health clinic asked their personal info and how they got in contact, places they went, etc. 1339 hotline was super helpful too. Everything was so streamlined.
