I saw one of the most dreadful conservative memes today that showed a box of Lucky Charms and said "The Irish aren't offended by this, because they aren't a bunch of pussies" or something along those lines.

So tonight let's talk about Irish folks, leprechauns, and offense.
Now, I'm paraphrasing the meme a bit there, but I think there was something about cultural appropriation in there too, I'm just too lazy to go looking for it again. Besides, the individual meme itself is not the important thing here, but rather the sentiment of it is.
The main thrust of the meme is this;

"Here's a stereotypical commercialized Irish thing. Irish people don't complain about it. Therefor people of colour who complain about cultural appropriation are just being thin-skinned, and should be more like Irish people and not complain."

For #StPatricksDay, I am making my dinner guests traditional corned beef and cabbage with Irish soda bread and Irish car bombs.

I think my first Irish soda bread loaf turned out nice.

My boyfriend’s family is impressed, so I’m happy.

Thread: Some Irish music for #StPatricksDay | Here’s a short history of Irish music that includes many of the composers & musicians who have rocked the world ☘️ (Hozier, Róisín Murphy, Macklemore & Phil Lynott)
Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) was a blind harpist & composer from the Nobber. He married in 1720 & settled down in Ireland’s cultural epicentre, Mohill, Leitrim. His Concerto is one of the most beautiful compositions:
Another of O’Carolan’s great works is A Farewell to Music:

Thread: Ireland has a rich heritage of Gaelic artwork. These are objects created by the Celtic-speaking peoples of the island. They range from magnificent gold jewellery to stunningly illuminated manuscripts. Let’s take a look at some masterpieces to celebrate #StPatricksDay
The Book of Kells (c800AD) is the most important Gaelic treasure in Ireland. It is a copy of the gospels created by four gifted scribes. When it was seen by Gerald of Wales in the 12th C he was convinced that the manuscript was the work of Angels; you can see why!
The Loughnashade Trumpet (c100BC) was found in Armagh & is a bronze masterpiece. The end plate is decorated in the classic Celtic La Tenè style with its sinuous curves & careful balance. I use La Tenè balance in my own work, so this is an important object to me.

A thread of quotes from "The Confession of Saint Patrick"

"It is through the power of our faith in the Trinity that I decided to write without fear, even though there are many that the knowledge of the Name of God, Who is ever faithful, can be spread far and wide"
"When I came to Ireland I spent each day tending sheep and I prayed many times during the day. Thus I grew more and more in the love of God. As the fear of God increased in me so did my faith, so that in a single day I would pray up to one hundred times" (16)

"Satan tempted me. This temptation was stronger than I ever experienced and I will remember it as long as I am in this body. He fell on me like a huge stone and I couldn't move any part of my body" (20)

Thread: For #StPatricksDay here’s a series of Irish artworks to celebrate the creativity of the island’s men & women. From Francis Bacon to Eileen Gray, the visual arts have been an important part of the culture of the Irish & their diaspora
Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1740-1808) created his portrait of the great neoclassical sculptor, Antonio Canova whilst in Rome. He also painted an image of the sculptor showing off his Cupid & Psyche (1789). Later (c1792-3) Hamilton painted Cupid & Psyche too.
Frederic William Burton (1816-1900) painted Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864). Burton would go on to become one of the most successful directors of the London National Gallery. Of particular Irish note is his Aran Fisherman’s Drowned Child (1841) - complete with keeners.

1. I believe that investigations leading to likely impeachment are proper. But Trump is still conspiring with the enemy and we need to ferret out all the members of Congress who are working with the enemy. So, how to do that? This election cycle is the big one. #2020 elects all
2. House members and over 20 @SenateGOP seats are in cycle in 2020. Plus @POTUS. Wweep would give Democrats power to remove all GOP judges. Not likely but a realistic goal is 60 so the Kremlin infested @SenateGOP has no role in governance. So how to do that without impeachment
3. that will work to rally the Trump white-supremacist base? Expand the conflict. Rather than go after Trump, go after his boss in the Kremlin and the quislings in the the Congress who have turned traitor too.

This "history" account has almost 400,000 followers and so a basic corrective about the origins of colonial slavery in the Americas is required to counter this insidious narrative.
In 1619 one hundred poor English children (not Irish) between 8 and 16 years of age were sent to Virginia from London. This was a radical extension of the English Poor Law (1601) where the children of paupers were to be provided for by being bound out as apprentices.
"for the setting to work of the children whose parents shall not, by the said Churchwardens, and Overseers, or the greater part of them, be thought able to keep and maintain their children."

As Irish Americans, we can’t celebrate our heritage without first coming to terms with the fact that our identity is constructed on a foundation of anti-Blackness. A thread about that history for #StPatricksDay:
In the decades leading up to the Civil War, Irish immigration to the US was reaching its peak with nearly two million Irish arriving between 1820 and 1860.
In the Northern states, Irish immigrants and an increasing number of free Blacks found themselves competing for the same low rung on the social ladder, and for the same jobs.
