When coronavirus overwhelms hospitals, lots of people die from other stuff because they can't get to a doctor. Thus, coronavirus' true toll is bigger than its fatality rate would suggest.

When you exceed the medical system's limits, coronavirus death rates shoot up, but so do death rates from everything else -- heart attack, cancer, stroke, accidents, etc. etc.
So remember: The people saying we need to come out of shutdown are urging us toward a bigger disaster than even they realize. They're urging us not just to let coronavirus patients die, but to let heart attack victims, cancer victims, and car accident victims die as well.

I've been looking at South Korea's official testing states, and I realize that they perform a lot fewer tests than the numbers I've been quoting from the news. Their test *capacity* is much larger than the actual # of tests they do.

For example, on the 26th, Korea performed 12,019 tests. That's 235 tests per million population.

In comparison, on the 26th the U.S. performed 107,172 tests. That's 325 tests per million population.

The U.S. has performed far fewer TOTAL tests per capita than Korea, but in terms of DAILY testing, the U.S. is now considerably *ahead* of Korea in per capita terms. And still ramping up!

1. Public Health and your personal health are not the same thing. The health of individuals and the health of the population are interdependent, but the strategies are different. The response to coronavirus (covid-19) in King County is a public health response.
The goal is to protect the community as a whole. Your role as an individual is to do your small part to cooperate in the larger project, for the good of the whole community. Think of it as part of your civic duty. A war effort without the war.

When nerds study this question, the CFR or the Case Fatality Rate becomes THE tool. It’s the best early measure we have to predict the likelihood of death from exposure to #COVID2019.

What is the CFR for COVID19? About 2.3%.

Others -
SARS : 9.6%
MERS: 34.4%
Flu: 0.5%

Knowing HOW it’s calculated is important to tease out any nuance.

Easy math: deaths / confirmed cases.

The CFR is HIGHLY dependent on good data, and good data can be hard to come by. In the US, we don’t even have enough testing kits to have accurate “confirmed cases.”
