EasyJet is grounding its entire fleet of 344 aircraft. The firm will furlough cabin crew for 2 months, and pay them 80% of their average wage via the Government retention scheme. No mention of what happens to ground staff though.
Meanwhile, EasyJet's biggest shareholder is trying to force its board into dropping an Airbus order for new aircraft, pointing out that the total cost of that order (to be delivered between 2020-2023) dwarfs the total market capitalisation of EasyJet.
Reminder: you are still entitled to compensation under EU rules (because we're in the transition period until the end of December 2020) which means airlines *must* refund you if you want. You don't have to accept vouchers for future travel.

It's hard to see how the high street can ever really recover from the coronavirus.

If you're a mid-size "non-essential" chain, you could have anywhere from a few dozen to hundreds of shops, all costing money but lying empty.

Any help for employees is at least a month away.
Any self-employed people who are involved with the business in any way won't be able to get help before June, and many won't even then because they don't qualify.

So you've got no money coming in, rent and other bills due immediately, and wobbly support somewhere down the road.
And then you glance up at the calendar, see 31 December 2020 circled in red.

That's the day the Brexit transition ends. That's the day your supply chains break, if they involve the EU in any way, shape or form.

Ok, my graphics skills are worse than useless (!) but here's an attempt to explain WHY delaying the end of the Brexit transition period by 2 years is so important.

GUIDE
Blue = current trend in economy
Red = trend in economy if we delay transition 2 years
Yellow = economic gain
Why? Because by moving the end of the transition period, we achieve several things:
- Gain 2 years to recover from the coronavirus downturn
- Encourage more companies to try & survive the coronavirus (e.g. with Government loans)
- Allow more time to rebuild Brexit countermeasures
If you're gagging for Brexit, never fear - we're already out of the EU, so "proper Brexit" (i.e. when you'll really feel it) can't be stopped. Brexit doesn't come with a "Rewind" button.

But maybe by delaying we have at least half a chance of avoiding a decades-long depression.

The Government said it would do "whatever it takes" to safeguard jobs.

Except... the 80% salary support portal says this: "The online service you’ll use to claim is not available yet. We expect it to be available by the end of April 2020."

Now, bear in mind that the end of April is when employers can *start* submitting claims. Unless HMRC are staggeringly efficient, it's presumably going to be mid-to-late May at the earliest before any actual money shows up in employers' bank accounts. So when do workers get paid?
Not to mention, would you really stake the future of your business by taking out a Government loan now, on the basis of something that's "expected" to be available in 5 weeks time? A loan which may have to be guaranteed, and will certainly need to be repaid?

(1). Ok America, I hope you're sitting down for this one. Although this story is about MInnesota, and Daycare Fraud, this scheme is going down in other major cities...
..... like Seattle, Detroit, Chicago and, evidence shows it’s happening with other fraud programs, like medical. Millions of $ in carry-on cash in suitcases fly out of the Minneapolis airport every week. Daycare fraud....costing US taxpayers as much as $100 million a year.
(2). According to public records and government sources, most daycare fraud in Minnesota is perpetrated by Somali immigrants.

Ha ha you gotta love how DNC Media frames this. AG Sessions "avoids appointing special counsel because he appointed a secret prosecutor months ago".

This spin is totally wrong.
Sessions had this guy gathering evidence for indictments months ago. He's gonna reveal things ONE STEP AT A TIME taking his own goddamn time as he does it.
Media is spinning this as if Sessions appointed this secret prosecutor like 5 minutes ago. To avoid having to appoint a second special counsel. Because hey, he's totally not going to prosecute anybody, he's just stalling or something here.
