This is a policy driven pandemic.

NY is the #COVID19 epicenter AND ALSO has the worst hospital quality in the nation BY FAR. @NYPIRG's Dec. 2019 report is 🔥🔥 & more relevant now than ever.

Out of a quality rating of 5 stars (that looks at things like safety of care, readmission, pt experience & mortality) NY's hospitals had an average of 2.18- 50th in the nation. 2/
Nation wide, only 2% of hospitals have a 1 star quality rating. In NY State, its 34%. In NYC, its 66%. This is a complete aberration. There are 37 states with NO 1 star hospitals. 3/
Zoom into NYC:

Queens: five 1 star, one 2 star
Bronx: five 1 star, one 2 star
Staten Island: two 1 star
Brooklyn: ten 1 star, two 3 star
Manhattan: two 1 star, two 2 star, four 3 star, one 4 & one 5 star

(Then look at the maps of where #coronavirus is hitting hardest) 4/
"Ten of the 11 hospitals from @NYCHealthSystem had only 1 star. These all are safety net hospitals that traditionally serve the underserved."

(& Lets all remember "underserved" people WOULDN'T BE UNDERSERVED if they had access to appropriate services smh...) 5/
"In the US overall, 6% of 3517 hospitals had five stars. Of 148 NY hospitals, only one had five-stars"

(and it's the @HSpecialSurgery which does NOT offer general care & practices illegal insurance discrimination- so it really only benefits the best-off NYers.) 6/
NO NY hospitals were included in @IBMWatsonHealth's 2019 "100 top-performing hospitals."

7 NY Hospitals made Healthgrade's 2019 "America's 250 Best Hospitals"- beat out by states with a third our population like Arizona (which had 8.) 7/
BuT wHaT aBoUt NY's "Premier" academic health centers?! Don't places like @nyulangone @nyphospital @MountSinaiNYC make @USNewsHealth's top 10 & 20 lists of "Best Hospitals?!"

Yes. But wait till you hear the caveats... 8/
"US News 'places much more weight on hospitals' performance in specialties or complex medical procedures than on care for chronically ill patients, the population that makes up the bulk of hospitalizations."

27.5% of ranking based on "Expert opinion"
5% based on pt safety 9/
Which mechanisms of political oppression brought us here? Still researching the Berger Commission/ MRTs I&II/ our ranking a decade ago before @NYGovCuomo rule.

But the 3 reports below are 💯necessary to understand NY health policy. #PassNYHealth 10/10
